In later episodes, Jim Rockford drove a 1976 or 1977 Firebird Esprit with the later front end and rear window treatment. As with most prime time shows, normal driving scenes used some scenes from previous shows. It was not uncommon to see the car transform from a 1976 to a 1975 and back again. I guess they figured most people were not watching it for the car. |

A 1975 Pontiac Firebird Esprit is actually the Jim Rockford special. The color is actually the 70's popular Coppermine Gold. The different various motor in Firebirds, while regular basic plain jane Firebird came with a 250 V6 motor or an optional 301 V8 motor, Firebird Esprits came with a standard 350 V8 Motor, Firebird Formulas came with a 400 v8 motor, and Firebird Trans Ams came with a SD 455 motor. They used a variety of 1974 through 1976 Firebird Esprit models in the earlier seasons. They later used a variety of 1977 through 1978 Firebird Esprit models in the later seasons. I will notify when I see more missing cars for the Rockford Files. -- Last edit: 2009-03-22 01:20:31 |

An episode from season 1 that I watched recently had it turn into a 1977 model for two scenes during a car chase. In a one hour show they repeated the same few seconds of film 2 or 3 times - usually of a car driving past the camera. The Firebird was then wrecked when Jim backed up at high speed into the front of a car that had been following him. Fortunately he got his Pontiac back from the shopn within a day or so... |

Actually the body changed in '75 to the larger back window, the front end changed in '76, then '77, most people think that the grilles on '77's and '78's are the same but the '77's had a honeycomb mesh and '78's had a X style mesh. |

From Ep. 1.21 The first appearance of the 1975 Pontiac Firebird Esprit. Unfortunately, it doesn't get much screen time. In the episode, Rockford is knocked out and placed inside the car as it is pushed over a cliff. Jim survives and gets a loaner from the car dealer/body shop which gets destroyed by the bad guys. I'll start doing Season 2 soon, so I'll have some better pics/caps to replace the current one from stronghold. -- Last edit: 2010-02-24 05:19:07 |

From Ep. 2.03 Jim drives through the parking lot at Paradise Cove to get to his trailer. Additional images (consider using one to replace the current video screencap): Jim hides in a used car lot to avoid the bad guys. Additional images: Jim's car is blown-up in a police station parking lot. The car is an older model Pontiac. According to the goofs page on IMDb, it's a 1970 1/2 Pontiac Firebird. |

an off the wall question about (perhaps) a car that i always admired. might the car to the right of rockford's firebird in the 11th and 12th thumbnails be a 1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2? if so - might that one be worth listing under its own right? if nobody knows off the cuff, i'll try to do some research tomorrow, but i have kids to be put to bed nOW... |

also... a volvo P1800 among others in the 4th thumb... |

In the first thumbnail, the black coupe is a 1969-1970 Mercury Cougar in XR-7 trim. |

From Ep. 2.05 From Ep. 2.06 From Ep. 2.07 From Ep. 2.08 From Ep. 2.09 From Ep. 2.10 From Ep. 2.12 The car is clearly an older Firebird like the one blown up in Ep. 2.03. From Ep. 2.13 In the third (3rd) thumbnail, you can see the "Formula 400" badge behind the front fender. According to this blog (http://jimsuva.typepad.com/blog/), the production switched from Esprits to Formulas in 1975, but they removed the spoiler and replaced the hood to make it look more like the original 1974 Firebird Esprit. -- Last edit: 2010-09-05 20:47:00 |

From Ep. 2.14 From Ep. 2.15 From Ep. 2.17 Jim backs in to the car behind him. You can tell an older model Pontiac is used. From Ep. 2.18 From Ep. 2.21 From Ep. 2.22 -- Last edit: 2010-04-06 22:52:57 |

The car is actually a 1975 Pontiac Firebird Formula not Esprit. |

This 1975 Firebird is Rockford's car during the second season of the show. In this image, you can see the turn signals have been moved. They are now between the headlights instead of below them: -- Last edit: 2010-08-02 00:26:27 |

http://pics.imcdb.org/0is33/s2e12020.1939.jpg On this 70-73 Firebird they even painted the back bumper black I remember. |

It is a 1975 Esprit. The Formula had two hood scoops, unavailable on the Esprit. |
◊ 2014-07-23 07:07 |
They replaced the hoods. All the '75-'78 cars used on the show were Formulas redressed to look like Esprits. |

Actually the Firebirds were Formulas done up like Eprits with the Badging & Hood & all Replaced with Esprit ones. According to the Actor he wanted it to Have the Performance for the Chases but be something Rockford could Afford so they made them all Look like Esprits |

I captured this image of the Firebird from Season 2 Episode 6. They used a helicopter for much of the episode. What a great, dynamic shot. |

As per all the previous research and commentary, this - and the other post-first-season cars - should be listed as Firebird Formula as Esprit. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2023-10-27 05:35:16 |
