I think it's a civil CJ-5. The side mounted spare is the key. Military M38A1s did not have a rear tailgate so the spare HAD to be mounted on the side (though recoiless rifle equipped models did have a rear cut-out as did the CJ-6-based M170 ambulance Jeeps). Also, it has the civil-style step, and no blackout light on fender top. |

CJ5 from 1955-65. CJ key is exposed headlights & one piece windshield. M38A1 would have recessed headlights and two piece windshield and the mentioned rear mounted spare. The M38A1 had a rear body panel for the tire mount & fuel can but there was no tailgate that would open. The M170 ambulance had a conventional tailgate with holes for the stretcher poles. The b/o driving light would be on the drivers side fender. |
