The sports sedan (i.e. pillarless hardtop) version. It is painted grey which, at the time of the film, was the typical livery colour for taxis in Greece. In the film, the car is a taxi boarded by two of the main characters (Dr. Spyros Karlaftis and Miss Rita) to take them from Rhodes airport (where Dr. Karlaftis has just arrived and Miss Rita has been waiting for him) to Rhodes town. In all probability, the car is a real taxi which was hired by the film crew for the purposes of the film. Full-size american sedans were, at the time, very common as taxis in Greece. In an earlier shot, just before the two characters board it, the taxi can be seen in the background with the driver standing beside the driver's door. I am tempted to think he is the real owner/driver of the taxi, who agreed to provide his taxi for free so that he could 'be in the movies'. In the sequence from which the picture used to illustrate the car comes from, we hear a shot-noice in the background, the taxi stops and the driver gets out and tells his passengers 'Excuse me, I have a flat tyre'. Dr. Karlaftis asks 'Will we be long?' the other replies 'five minutes' and Karlaftis then suggests to Miss Rita "Shan't we get out?" and they do. The whole thing is, probably, a ploy to show them talking (as they proceed to do) with beautiful background shots of Rhodes. If my hypothesis about the taxi driver is true, then he also had a couple of lines. Part of the "fare" perhaps! The taxi's number is 83378 in the pattern of Greek plates from 1956-1972. By 1963 most areas had switched to six digit numbers (XXX.XXX) but perhaps Rhodes still had some five digit ones left. The plate, as far as I can tell, looks genuine. -- Last edit: 2010-08-28 06:02:55 |

AFAIK the Oldsmobile hardtop sedan was called Holiday Sedan. The name Sport Sedan was used by Chevrolet. |
