Another 40/50hp, but not THE Silver Ghost. Apparently Classic & Sportscar magazine, Jul 2007 issue has a report "Driving 2 Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts supplied by Swiss classic dealer Lukas Huni Reg R-1075 and R-2104" in the 'From the Cockpit' column by Mick Walsh. |

Note this car has the sloping bonnet so would date from 1912-14. It might be an Alpine Eagle. |

R-2104 is not an Alpine Eagle, but the 1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp London-Edinburgh trial car, bodied by Barker. See http://www.chichesterweb.co.uk/rrec/rre82.htm for a photo of the car at the RR centenary display at the 2004 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Backstory is as follows: "The legendary London-Edinburgh model resulted from a 1911 challenge by arch rival Napier. Napier’s distributor Selwyn Francis Edge entered a 65-hp car in an RAC-observed run from London to Edinburgh, driven entirely in high gear. Rising to the challenge, Rolls-Royce responded with a nearly standard Silver Ghost chassis clad in attractive, lightweight tourer bodywork. Higher compression and a larger carburettor were the only mechanical modifications. The Rolls easily outshone the Napier on fuel consumption, and in a timed run at the Brooklands track, it bested its rival, 78.26 to 76.42 miles per hour, driven by Ernest Hives, who later would become the Rolls-Royce chief engineer. The same chassis, with a single-seat body and high ratio axle, was clocked at 101.8 mph in the flying mile at Brooklands the following year. The fame of its achievements and the aesthetics of the close-coupled tourer body resulted in production of a small number of similar models in ensuing years." This isn't the actual London-Edinburgh car, but rather one of a number of replicas constructed for customers by Rolls-Royce. The actual London-Edinburgh car is chassis no 1701, built in 1911. |

This 40/50 is a 1910 chassis bodied as a Torpedo (not a Tourer) by a unknown builder with Nickel fittings. Went to Australia from new and back in London by 1914. Originally supplied with a splendid boa constrictor horn fitted to the front wing. |
