jpts ◊ 2016-09-05 12:25	This scene was the reenactment of the arrival of John Dillinger who arrived under guard at Midway Airport in Chicago, Illinois on the night of the 30th January 1934 following his extradition from Tucson, Arizona. Upon arriving at Midway Airport, Dillinger was then taken by a convoy consisting of 85 police officers travelling in 13 cars with 12 motorcycle outriders to the Lake County Jail at Crown Point, Indiana to be tried for the murder of East Chicago Police Officer, William "Patrick" O'Malley who was shot by Dillinger during the robbery at the First National Bank in East Chicago, Indiana on the afternoon of the 15th January 1934. In the East Chicago robbery, the gang was scooping up $20,000 in notes into bags when the police surrounded the bank, Officer O'Malley fired four shots with his service revolver at the gang, in response, Dillinger shouted back to Officer Malley, "You asked for it!" and shot O'Malley eight times in the chest with a Thompson Submachine Gun, killing O'Malley, before fleeing in a two-door Ford coupe with Ohio number plates. Dillinger was considered as the first prisoner to be brought back by air, as at the time, prisoners in the US who were extradited from state to state were usually moved by either road or rail, a common method of extradition that is still in use today. -- Last edit: 2024-02-21 15:17:19
