Home-made boy racer and nicely subtle, but there was never a Mk1 GT estate (though some Mk2 GT estates were made). This car has trim finishers on the side flashes so is a Super.

Wrong! Not quite correct- there were 26 MK 1 GTs made in 1965 originally made for Nairobi Police like they made a special estate version based on Ford Consul Classic 315 one of these surivors was exported back to the UK and featured in May 1995 in the now defunct (as it was taken over by Practical Classics) Popular Classics (I have yet to document that issue..Hard one to find) where 17 of these were made and 3 are thought to be around 1 in the UK BLK 3986; 1 in the US and 1 in Norway.

AS for the Cortina GT estates The initial 26 or so GTs were thought to be the only batch-I have documented letters from 1983 Practical Classics where it was thought 2 additional ones were made
In 1983 #26 of the 26 ordered was for sale - it is thought 25 went to Kenya and this white one was not exported but sold privately
another letter came from a former owner who owned a purple one
and in same year an Ambassador Blue one hit the market

Prehaps as these GTs were made later near the end of the Mk1 production hence why the MK2 was also offered as a special option to the public! a Mk2 GT wagon was a long term Report vehicle for one of the writers of Classic Cars (GB) in the 1970s

Further to my post telling you that 26 Ford Cortina Mk1 GTs were made for Nairobi Police force in 1965

Letter was a seller from a current owner in 1983 in the UK
"..Letter from current owner (may have bought car in April 83) of 1/26 cars made for Nairobi Police force 1965 carried C Reg when he first obtained car had difficulty getting answers from Ford Dealers and thus Wrote to Ford Public Affairs that car was real but engineering office confirmed there was 25 built were dispatched and I have number 26 ; the first owner wrote to tell me in 1965 a personal friend of mine knew I was looking for an estate car and that I wanted something out of the ordinary as Dagenham were producing 25 estate cars for the Nairobi police and I understand produced 26 in case 1 came off the assembly line with problems as however all others were perfect Ford were left with one surplus to requirements and my friend was able to obtain spare vehicle for me - I had no choice of colour it was white with a black interior and I was requested not to put any GT badges on the car as Ford did not want the car advertised as such this is probably why they will not admit manufacturing it " -quote no photo by LJ Foggarty; Partridge Green; Sussex See September 1983 Practical Classics (GB)Page 30 Volume 4 Issue 5

Earlier the car was for sale in Practical Classics in April 1983 issue in classifieds page 86 Volume 3 #12 built for Nairobi Police force 1965 ; C Reg heavy duty Brabham clutch MOT proof of autheniticy offers seller gave their phone number as of 1983 as 0403 710 364 -UK

An additional 2 Ford Cortina GTs have thought to have been added to initial 26 ordered for the UK market

Here a letter from 1 of 2 -a former owner of a Purple car!
Letter from a reader whose brother also got one in 1965 at the time our family business premises was opposite Leeds main Ford dealer and my father was a good friend of their MD - Being a sporty type my brother had run TRs and MG Ts for years and got wind of a special batch of GT Estates for the Kenya police ; our friend the main dealer got hold of one for him it was deep purple and was registered with his private number R 55 ; Reader used it now and then in town and it did have GT Badges on the tailgate and those 4 supplementary instruments perched on top of the dash he kept it for 2 years and it was sold it would have been registered with a Leeds C Registration (UA; UB; UG; UM or NW) but neither of us can remember its actual registration it would appear 2 GT Estates escaped from Dagenham" no photos See Nov 1983 Practical Classics Page 24 Volume 4 #7 and writer was Steve Waldenburg ; Leeds whose brothers also of Leeds owned it 1965-1967

Interesting that within the same issue the 2nd or was this car turned up for sale in Ambassador Blue (often deep Blues are often classed as Purple?)

In Classifieds
CORTINA MK1 GT ESTATE 1965 for sale Classified but no photo ; very rare; condition 2; ambassador blue with black interior mot and t spares 450pounds Tel Yeovil 27201 as of 1983 see Nov 1983 Practical Classics (GB) Page 93 Volume 4 & Issue 7

I belive there are a couple of mk 1 gt estates in NZ , have seen photos of a white one with lotus stripe. I also know of one in the Bristol area. I myself have owned one since the early 80's. club seems to think there could have been anything from 50-100 cars built.

DVLA details for HYK 352C (a London plate) are:
Date of Liability 01 07 2013
Date of First Registration 01 09 1965
Year of Manufacture 1965
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1198cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available.

Other plate sites describe it as Cortina Deluxe. However some forum sites talk about a few Mk1 GT Estates (well under 100 - possibly only 15-20?) as variously a special order for Kenya police (who had previously commissioned a locally converted Consul Classic Estate - /vehicle_310545-Ford-Consul-Classic-Station-Wagon-109E-1961.html ), or ZA or NZ - http://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/showthread.php?277-mk-1-cortina-GT-estate , http://105speed.hyperboards.com/?action=view_topic&topic_id=9911&start=1 . And a Bournemouth dealer (F. English) may have specially ordered a batch of 3. The trim seems to have been export-spec GT with the Super trim strips as here (and Super VIN numbers), although a few online pics suggest there was also a script badge within the side scallop at the back (unclear what the text was - Super? eg Link to "www.simoncars.co.uk" , Link to "i239.photobucket.com" , http://www.flickr.com/photos/warwickrobinson/1158075648/ ) - not seen here.

Ford often did mysterious shadow permutations which were never officially acknowledged (Lotus 4 doors and automatics, the Mk2 GT Estate, 4 door and estate Escort Mexicos, etc) so this is not a totally surprising scenario. On balance, I'm changing this one to GT although still unclear if definitely a real one or not - it might attract the attention of someone who knows the actual car or can add more info.

@cortinaestate - can you tell us anything more about your car and its origins? any pics? or anything about GT estates generally - we have a Mk2 - /vehicle_454640-Ford-Cortina-GT-Estate-1969.html ?

it is a 65 car, monaco red. I pulled it out of a house garage where it had been since the mid 70's. bourght as a spares car for my saloon, was going to remove the engine and put it in the saloon. never even new they built gt estates. talking with club members i found out they did and how to find out if it was real, mind you , you would have to have been a bit keen to have built one yourself. club confirmed that it was a real one, so we then spent the next 3 years putting it back on the road. basically the shells are delux or super, they have complete gt running gear, 4 clocks , dash handbrake. the car came with it's original green log books, mine does say gt estate but not all did. if I remember one of the owners was from Bournemouth.
