This fender ornament error continues. Champions and Commander Regals had fender top ornaments optionally in 1951. State Commanders and Land Cruisers had them standard. The photo'ed car is either a Champion or a Regal Commander. |

What are visible differences between Champions and Commander Regals? |

In contrast to 1950, 1951 is a very difficult year in which to tell Champions and Commanders apart from the exterior. (The dashboards are very different and of course the Commanders had the newly introduced V-8 engines) I know of only 3 sure ways: 1) The small "Champion" or "Commander" nameplate in the left side (as you sit in the car) grille opening. 2) The emblem on top of the hood (Studebaker crest on Champions and V-8 emblems on Commanders) 3) The presence of V-8 emblems above the trunk lid handle on Commanders. Naturally, Land Cruisers (technically part of the Commander series) had the rear window vents and were longer. They also still had "Land Cruiser" nameplates on the front fender sides. Commanders and Champions did not (unlike in 1950, when all models had side nameplates). All 1951 Commanders and Land Cruisers had bright rocker panel mouldings but this trim appeared also on Regal Champions. -- Last edit: 2010-04-08 02:26:33 |
