In "Alan Attraction" (episode 1.2), Alan is forced to downgrade his Rover 800. His personal assistant Lynn suggests a Rover Metro, but Alan's having none of it.

Lynn: Now, Alan, you’re going to have to trade down your Rover 800 for a smaller car.
Alan: Go on.
Lynn: I picked up these brochures for the new Metro, it’s a lovely little car, and if you do...
Alan: Lynn, I'm not driving a Mini-Metro.
Lynn: But you do have to make substantial savings.
Alan: Lynn, I am not driving a Mini-Metro.
Lynn: But if you do, you can keep Pear Tree Productions going with a skeleton staff of two and...
Alan: There's no point finishing the sentence, Lynn, because I am not driving a Mini-Metro.
Lynn: But if you do...
Alan: Lynn! I'll just speak over you.
Lynn: But...
Alan: No! Go on, try and finish the sentence and see what I do. Go on.
Lynn: With a skeleton staff of two...
Alan: [speaking over her] I'm not driving a Mini-Metro, I'm not driving a Mini-Metro, I'm not driving a Mini-Metro.
Lynn: No, no it's different, it's called a Rover Metro now.
Alan: They've rebadged it, you fool!
Lynn: Well, Alan, if you want a Rover 200 you’re going to have to sack everyone at Pear Tree Productions.
Alan: Fine.
Lynn: Including Jill.
Alan: Jill, lovely Jill, she's my favourite. But fine, I'll sack her.

In the next episode he has a new Rover 200, which he contines to drive for the rest of the first series.

But he still has a very brief affair with her and sacks her (over the radio) at the end of the episode.

Technically it wouldn't have been a Metro by this time, they were Rover 100s!!

Unlike his other Rovers this one actually carries a Norfolk registration!

"I'm not driving a Rover 100" doesn't sound as funny, also he calls it a Mini-Metro and it hadn't been called that since the early-80s. It still looked the same and I think most people would still have thought of it as the Metro.

I like the calls to his ex-wife and her new boyfriend.

"How’s Mr. Planet of the Apes man? Oh. Is he still driving that Renault Megane? Yeah? Can I just read you something from Top Gear magazine? No, it’s alright, I’ve got it here.
“With a mere ninety break-horse-power available, progress is too leisurely to be called fast, but on the motorway in fifth gear the Megane’s slow pace really becomes a pain. Uphill runs become power-sappingly mundane, while overtaking National Express coaches can become a long, drawn-out affair.”
Not my words, Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine. Hello?"

In the new film "Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa" guess what Lynn drives...

Spoiler - click here to see it
That's right, a Metro! An ancient B-reg Austin Metro.
