Yes. I think Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B, ca 1937. TBC as this one has a special body. -- Last edit: 2006-04-09 12:32:15 |

Identified as "Spider 2900 coachwork by Alfa Romeo" as shown here (last picture on this web-page). http://www.cromoclassico.com/eng/alfa_romeo.html The registration number is almost certainly the same as in the Poirot episode. (Part of the registration is visible in the thumbnail pictures.) The vehicle details for DLY 163 are: Date of Liability 01 02 2008 Date of First Registration 12 11 1981 Year of Manufacture 1937 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2905CC Vehicle Colour BLUE Picture of DLY 163 and a picture from the 'Poirot' crash scene. -- Last edit: 2007-02-11 10:52:56 |

Is it useful to precise that the coachwork is by Alfa, as it is already listed as an Alfa? |

Apparently in this case for an 8C coachwork by Alfa Romeo was very rare since almost all were bodied by Touring and of the Superleggeria (super-light) construction or a few other coachbuilders and not Alfa Romeo. -- Last edit: 2007-02-11 10:52:25 |

The red car in the 'panorama' thumbnail picture is almost certainly an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B by Touring from the distinctive louvre arrangement on the bonnet sides and top as below. Its a pity the Poirot episode does not show the car in full because I think it really looks a stunning car. I've looked at the episode a number of times and a better view is just not possible. Beautiful lines, whomever the coachmaker... |

As it is an ALFA 2900 it is extremely desireable. How can it have been damaged for the purpose of making the film? A mock-up perhaps? |

Quotes from the link ^ There was only one of these sophisticated twin-supercharged eight-cylinder sports cars bearing that blue/grey livery, the car restored and owned for many years by that fount of 8C Alfa knowledge Simon Moore. After watching The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman again recently I asked Simon about the filming, and how it felt to see his precious charge being used as a battering ram. ..... After a spirited chase in which the wheezing Vauxhall heels like a dinghy through corners at, oh, dozens of miles an hour, the brave captain rams the bad guy's car. "They parked both cars nose-to-nose, then reversed them apart. When they reversed the film it looked like a prang." To show the resulting damage the film crew built a mule with nose, bonnet and front wings copied from Simon's car. "I think it was Williams & Pritchard who measured up the car and did the panelwork," he says, "and it was built on a Beetle chassis pan. It was driveable, just for moving it around. For the accident they set about it with hammers, then pushed it against the Vauxhall for the scene where Hastings hits the baddie and knocks him over the bridge into the water." 1936 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 A Spider 'Simon Moore' [Chassis #412002] (DLY 163) DLY 163 ✓ SORN MOT No results returned Vehicle make: ALFA ROMEO Date of first registration: November 1981 Year of manufacture: 1937 Cylinder capacity (cc): 2905 cc Fuel type: PETROL Export marker: No Vehicle status: SORN in place Vehicle colour: RED |

In the episode, the vehicle was Hastings' new vehicle that he ordered at the beginning of the episode. |
