Location is Nieuwe Herengracht in Amsterdam. On the right many houses are missing since the second world war, not as a result of bombing, but because of the 'hongerwinter'. Winter 1944/45 the West of Holland was totally isolated by the nazis: no food, no heating materials. And most houses in this area were empty because the Jews who lived there had been deported. Thus the remaining Amsterdam people came to these houses to get all parts of wood for heating, and the houses collapsed. It took about 50 years until this area was rebuilt... |
