Champion Regal or Commander??. In some pics I've seen Commanders with some chrome trim over the headlights, and here the car hasn't it. |

I believe this fender-top brightwork was optional by 1951. My family owned a '51 Commander for over 10 years and it had no such chrome pieces. Would need to see the engine, dashboard or presence/absence of V-8 emblems on the trunklid or hood crest to tell for certain which model. Photo of a 1951 Commander I found on the internet, showing no fender top chrome: Link to "posterous.com" Second pix, to prove this is a Commander. Note V-8 trunklid emblem. Link to "posterous.com" This is a Champion, since all Commander convertibles were in the State series and all States had fender top ornaments. OK. Final word (hopefully!) on '50 to '51 Studebaker fender top ornaments. (Maybe someday, I will research the '47 to '49 models) In 1950, such ornaments were standard on Commanders/Land Cruisers and optional on Champions. In 1951, they were standard on the Commander State and Land Cruisers but optional on Commander Regals and Champion models. I hope that clears confusion. (My family had a 1951 Studebaker Commander Regal sedan without the ornament option) BTW, in 1951, the gravel shields were chromed on State Commanders, Land Cruisers & Champion convertibles, and rubber on Regal Commanders, non-convertible Regal Champions and Deluxe Champions. There were no shields at all on Custom Champions which also had no hood ornaments and painted headlamp/taillamp rims. -- Last edit: 2010-02-07 18:15:23 |

Sure enough there IS one more word to say on the fender ornaments! In 1950, all Commanders and Land Cruisers had fender top ornaments and they were long and low. The 1950 Champions had fender top ornaments available optionally but they were not the same ornaments as the Commanders. The Champion ornaments were shorter and had small "fins" on the leading edges. Those same optional Champion ornaments were used on all 1951 Studebakers that had fender top ornaments (with the long, low 1950 Commander style being discontinued). Whew! |
