I'm not sure it'a a Stutz. It ceratinly has the styling cues of a Bearcat, but so did most factory built sports cars of the period and many "specials" made out of period touring cars. While anything could have been changed bu the mid-1950s, it does not have a Stutz fuel tank (they had two fillers), the headlights are wrong, too much of a rear deck in back of the fuel tank, and most importantly, the gearshift lever is mounted too far rearward. A very minor point I'd mention is the hood strap which Stutz's didn't have. Why add one to a stripped racer? After seeing this film, this scene is taken at a mid-50s concourse, road race and vintage car race, probably at the Montery/Pebble Beach event. Most of the cars in the scene have manufacturer names painted on the sides...Simplex, Mercedes. Cadillac. Since Cadillac didn't make a similar sports car in period, my guess is that they're all "specials" made from older (and then very cheap) touring cars. It may be a cut down Stutz touring car built up as a vintage racer in the Bearcat style...but I really don't think it's a aunthentic 1912-16 Bearcat. -- Last edit: 2008-05-07 04:53:49 |
