It is an Austin K8 (1948-54).

It certainly is an Austin K8, a very very rare ambulance these days and the vehicle survives in preservation in its original livery of Bracknell Division St John Ambulance and still bears the number EJB 438!

Do you know when it was retired from St John Ambulance? For an ambulance that appeared in a film in 1955 to survive in preservation now is quite a coincidence if it was still in service and picked out randomly from the fleet, but less so if it was already in private hands.

By the way, I see that The Quatermass Xperiment was a Hammer production. Hammer Films was based at Bray Studios in Berkshire, so it makes sense for an ambulance from Bracknell Division to appear. Anyway, if you know the owner you ought to tell them about its film appearance if they don't already know.

I have no idea when it was retired from St John but it has been in private hands for many years and is currently undergoing a sympathetic rebuild!

Austin K8 Welfarer ambulances

Austin Memories...
"You could order a ambulance conversion on the K8 which was factory built and called the Welfarer K8/AA. This had the track increased by 1'' and was fitted with low pressure tyres (9.00 x 16). The suspension was also altered to give a softer ride, by different road springs and shock absorber settings.

Austin K8 Welfarer ambulance introduced October 1948. The K8 Welfarer chassis was also used as the basis for a Lomas W-type ambulance body.
