This scene was the reenactment of the death of Jacques Mesrine and the wounding of Mesrine's girlfriend, Sylvia Jeanjacquot who were both shot by members of the Gendarmerie as they were sitting in Mesrine's gold BMW sedan at the intersection next to the Porte de Clignancourt Metro Station in the 18th arrondissement of Paris on the morning of the 2nd November 1979. In the ambush, the Gendarmerie had fired 20 rounds at Mesrine and Jeanjacquot, 15 of them hit Mesrine with a "coup de grâce" shot administered by a pistol, while Jeanjacquot had lost an eye and received lasting damage to her arm and had to undergo multiple surgeries operations. Also in the car was Jeanjacquot's poodle who was killed in the crossfire. After multiple surgeries, Jeanjacquot later served two years imprisonment before being acquitted of any crimes. In the aftermath, the media saw this as extrajudicial killing and criticized the Gendarmerie for the shooting, while both the Gendarmerie and the detective in charge of the ambush, Robert Broussard had claimed that Mesrine would never surrender and that he was armed with a gun and two grenade launchers taped together and adapted to be brought into action instantly. Mesrine's former lawyer, Maître Malinbaum stated that the shooting was a public assassination of her client and demanded a judicial investigation and wants the Gendarmerie and the French State to be held accountable. -- Last edit: 2022-12-31 08:06:18 |
