Strange fact:
As far as I understand, this was the first time that Mercedes used another engine than the badge claimed.
The all aluminium inline six cylinder 2996 cc fuel injected M189 engine had finally became too expensive to make and was replaced by the same engine fitted to the 280 SE, that is the 2778 cc M 130 (also inline six cylinder with fuel injection) but with a cast iron bottom.
Albeit now reliable (remake of the M 129 engine fitted to the 250 SE) it wasn't really up to par because of the extra weight of the extended body, air suspension, air condition and more luxurious interior, not to mention the automatic box!
It was dog slow with 12 seconds 0 - 100 km/h.

Because of all that it wasn't a complete hit, despite of a comparatively low price and was outnumbered by the 6.3 litre V8 (available at the same time but more than 50% more expensive) and later replaced by the 3.5 litre V8.

I was wrong.
It seems Mercedes follows a tradition of misnaming.

(The featured 300 SEL should have had a 3,0 litre engine, but has here a 2,8 litre)

190 Dc [W 110] should have had a 1.9 litre engine, but has a 2,0 litre. (But the later 200 D had a correct badge)
The 180 [W 120] had a 1,8 litre, but later the 180 a, the 180 b and the 180 c had a 1,9 litre.
Similarly the 180 D and the 180 Db had a 1,8 litre engine, while the 180 Dc had a 1,9 litre.
