I can't understand this ostility shown by NSU-freaks towards Audi. :o I know, some NSU enthusiasts may hate Audi, but I still think that NSU is the Audi-Tradition (and I'm not the only that think so - the Audi brand, for example) :whistle: .

@ Ingo: do you know if NSU enthusiasts might hate VW? I've recently known that the K70 was originally a NSU, but VW has "stolen" it, changing it into a VW ;)

@walter: yes, several NSU-freaks are hating VW indeed, more than Audi, no kidding. Because VW has, after they had bought NSU and have merged it with Audi in 1969, stopped all NSU-related models, developings and so on.


The K 70 is in fact an absolute exception. For the fans it's indeed a fully accepted NSU. Since over 20 years the K 70 got its own class at the NSU-meetings, the yearly international ones, but at local ones, too. The international NSU-meeting 1992 in Switzerland was the first bigger NSU-meeting I'd visited. I've heard, how some people have whispered "Why is this Volkswagen over here at a NSU-meeting?". I just have opened the engine-hood and they'd been quiet immediately. :)

There are NSU-freaks, who are cutting the VW-logo off the original mudflaps of their K 70. Some smaller engine-parts, so the valve-shafts and -caps, the oil-cap etc. are identical with the engine of the 4-cylinder-NSU's. After it was used for the K 70, too, they all had the part-number and the VW Audi-signs on (at NSU it was unusual to print part-numbers on parts). So these hardcore NSU-fans are having work to erase the VW Audi-logos from these little parts. At the oil-cap it's easy, just by using sand-paper.

For a lot of years VW has hushed up any NSU-related things, the whole history and so on. I've heard of VW-dealers, which had been NSU-dealers decades before, that some important guys of Wolfsburg have made problems, because they had a NSU standing in their showrooms.

Sorry, I couldn´t help but notice that some of these "NSU freaks" obviously behave as mature and open-minded as a bunch of 12-year-old girlies fighting over competing boygroups. Erasing logos and such for "ideological" reasons is just ignorance of automotive history and appears just Pippi-Longstocking-ish to me: "I create my own reality, no matter what actually happened." And if so-called enthusiasts start to literally hate a certain brand, they ought to consult a doctor as fast as they can. :D

How did the NSU problem start? What happened that caused the NSU group not to like/or even hate VW and Audi?
I love learning about different types of automotive history, but I would rather ask someone who knows rather than
consulting some 2nd or 3rd party source.

Maybe I should have asked this question in the forum.

@Neptune: NSU in the late 60ies had the identical problems as BMW in the late 50ies and Borgward in the early 60ies:

1. not enough capital, Borgward and Glas were even owned by private persons

2. too small, compared with the big brands as VW, Mercedes Benz, Opel and Ford

3. a problematical model-range
a) only small or micro-cars (BMW: Isetta, 600 and 700; Glas: Goggomobil, Isar; NSU: different Prinzes, from the Prinz 4 up to
the TTS), which had over-aged and antiquated technology. And -very important- with small cars, you cannot make money in Europe!
Even not today. The real money the companies are making with compact and middle-class-cars.
b) except the small cars only expensive (and expensively made) premium-cars (BMW: 501 and 502; Borgward: P 100; NSU: RO 80,
which were good for the reputation, but the selling-amount was not as big, that the companies could survive with own power.
c) nothing between the micro-cars and the premium-class. BMW had survived by the 1961 released "New Class" (1500, 1800 and
2000) and later the 02-Series. The Isabella was the correct idea for Borgward, but it was not enough (not enough sold cars,
not enough money). NSU has developed the K 70. It should have been released at the Geneva-show 1969, but VW had stopped the
presentation just days before.

DKW (Audi hadn't existed between 1945 and 1965) had the problem, that they only had built -absolutely antiquated- two-stroke-cars, which construction -engine and chassis, too - were firstly made in the 30ies. In the 50ies, until 1964, DKW was owned by Mercedes Benz and then sold to Volkswagen. The last redemption of the company with the four rings had been the engine, the legendary constructor Ludwig Kraus had brought with him, when he was relocated from Mercedes Benz to DKW. It was an engine, developed by Mercedes Benz in the 50ies for the use in a military jeep, a car which was finally never produced. Kraus had placed this engine into a DKW F 102 (ancient engine, but new designed chassis and body) and with this technology-switch DKW mutated to Audi. "DKW" was always associated with the outdated, small two-stroke-cars, so they fished our the name "Audi", which was used in the pre-war-time for the middle-class-cars.

Volkswagen has bought Audi in 1965 and NSU in 1969. VW had also big problems with their antiquated model-range. Indeed, if they hadn't took over NSU and -mainly- Audi, they would had crushed into bankrupcy in the mid-70ies! VW had only cars with aircooled engines in the back in their programme. Finally, the whole modern VW-range based on the cars, which were developed before 1969 at Audi!! The first Passat (Dasher in the USA) is nothing more than a 1972 Audi 80 with hatchback. The VW Polo was developed and built by Audi as Audi 50. The engines of Golf (Rabbit in America) and Scirocco were also based on the Audi-technology. Only the K 70 was different, this was a pure NSU-project.

In 1969, when VW also had bought NSU, they had merged Audi and NSU. Except the small K 70-episode, they had stopped everything, which NSU had constructed, planned or projected. In the following years the NSU-production was dropped out and the factory in Neckarsulm was used for the production of Audi-cars (and the Porsche 924, too. Annother car, planned and constructed as an Audi).
The reason for final deathblow of NSU was caused by Ferdinand Piech (in the 70ies main constructor at Audi). He always hated the Wankel-engine and always had only accepted his 5-cylinder-idea. Finally he was successful, so the Wankel-developing was stopped -which was the reason to stop the RO 80-production, too.


This acting of Volkswagen and Ferdinand Piech was the reason, why hardcore NSU-freaks still are hating VW and Audi. some of them never had bought a VW or Audi as an all-day-car.


P.S. A footnote: the first years the Audi F 103-cars (60, 72, 80 and Super 90) had still the Mercedes-star on their engine-blocks.

@Animatronixx: in 2000 I'd shown a Japanese friend the legendary Nürburgring. We came there late in the evening, after a race (DTM, I think), had ended. All the gates had been open. My friend -one of the craziest VW-/Audi-freaks of Japan- just wanted to go down on his knees and touch the legendary ground. He really kissed the ground (like the Pope!), after I'd shown him the garage in the old Fahrerlager, which was always used in the 30ies by Bernd Rosemeyer. :lol:

Now back to topic: while the Japanse guy was busy with snogging the asphalt, I'd found on the ground some little paper-flags, given by the sponsor Audi AG. No kidding: someone had used a big black "Edding"-pen to strike out the Audi-logo had had written "NSU" on the paper. :)
