Is this scene set in the USSR? Because at least one American-made film had scenes set in the USSR in which Checkers were used to represent Soviet cars. /vehicle_143089-Checker-Marathon-A12-E-1964.html |

Well I'll be! Any ideas as to why Capitalist Checkers were popular in the Communist USSR? They are very similar to a Soviet car; unchanged design during the production run, antiquated styling compared to other Capitalist vehicles, built for economy (as Checkers were mainly built as taxis, though civilian variants were available!), and able to drive great distances for long stretches of time. In fact, I would daresay the A-11 Checkers are a Capitalist version of a Communist vehicle, in regards to being built cheaply and economically, with minimal design changes over the production run. |

They weren't popular, this is one of the many Western cars that Soviet sailors and diplomats brought with them. During Soviet times, the cities with the most "innostrani" per capita were of course the seaports: Kaliningrad, Riga, Tallinn and of course Leningrad. I'm not sure if the Russian Pacific coast already had as much JDM cars in the 70s as today? |
