In one of his earlier videos (circa 1995) Clarkson holds a drag race to discover "The Fastest Production Car in the World". It is between the mid-1990s Aston Martin Vantage (just like this one, in fact it's probably the same car with a different plate), the Dodge Viper, the TVR Cerbera, the Lotus Esprit V8, the Porsche 911 Turbo (993) and the Caterham Super Seven (this version has a 2 litre engine that produces about 200 BHP). This might not sound like a definitive list but he explains he decided not to include members of the 200+ mph club, such as the McLaren F1, the Jaguar XJ220 and the Ferrari F50 because they are too exclusive and financially-prohibitive to really be considered as consumer cars (as he puts it they are "limited-run ultracars", though most likely the production budget wouldn't cover them) and there are no Ferraris such as the 512 or the 355 because Ferrari wouldn't co-operate with them and there was no Lamborghini Diablo, because he'd claimed he'd already raced one against the Vantage and it lost. The test is to see which covers a standing mile first, the results are: 1) TVR Cerbera (which does it in just over 30 seconds) 2) Porsche 911 Turbo 3) Lotus Esprit V8 4) Aston Martin Vantage 5) Caterham Super Seven 6) Dodge Viper (which is neck and neck with the Caterham but about 5 seconds behind the top 3) At the end of the video he proclaims the Ferrari 355 (which he owned at the time) to be the "greatest car in world, ever". -- Last edit: 2006-09-19 01:01:18 |
