..based on an Austin Allegro ... but I don't believe it's called Allegro.? |

The Allegro-based car was simply called the Vanden Plas 1500 (it was later joined by a 1700 version). This was therefore the first Vanden Plas car since the marque has been established in 1960 not to be called a "Princess". This move coincided with the Vanden Plas operation being moved from the Austin-Morris division of BLMC to the Jaguar group, to reflect the fact that two-thirds of VDP's turnover was generated by its Daimler products. |

It is called Vanden Plas 1500. It is the first Vanden Plas not using 'Princess' as a second brand name. Wise decision, it doesn't look like a princess, does it? |

..I could name one ugly one ... but that would be mean.!! |

The original Allegro not very beautiful, but this one is really ugly The restyled Allegro was much better (with double round headlights) |

Tastes differ vastly. I quite like the Allegro-VDP. Then again, so I do 62 Dodges. But where else can you sit in connolly leather and be surrounded by real burlwood for, say, 300 quid nowadays? And btw, Clarkson is an idiot and the cars he likes hardly ever appeal to me. -- Last edit: 2006-01-27 22:40:27 |

yes..I remember a sporty(.?) version ..called the Equipe.! |

For the VDP ... I think you'd be sitting surrounded by the wood and leather .... but not going very far.! (To be honest with you ..one of my uncle's once owned one of these ..and i traveled in it ..once ..as a child ... It didn't feel too bad.! ..not as though I was paying to much attention to it though.!) As for Clarkson ..for the most ..he talks CRAP (..and he's a useless driver.!) ... but he doe's come out with an occasional good/fun comment.! |

I prefered Tiff Needell, unfortunately he his not in Top Gear anymore |

He's still around ..on another car show "Fifth gear" ..on British TV (Channel 5) |

Yeah very funny, hahaha. Especially when he does what he likes best: giving out on the Germans and doing the Hitler Salute. Imho he should be removed from public TV just for that. -- Last edit: 2006-01-29 01:09:22 |

the grille reminds me of a 1990 jag vandenplas |

Oh the humanity! |
◊ 2008-01-01 20:57 |
That is the most horrible automobile ever! It's like if someone took an Alegro, and added a tacky Jaguar grille, kinda like how people used to put Rolls Royse grilles on VW Beatles. |
◊ 2008-01-10 13:41 |
I somehow like this car |
◊ 2008-06-03 11:22 |
It's utterly disgusting. The original Allegro was bad enough, but that big chrome grille succeeded in making it the ugliest car the 1970's. I'm disappointed Jeremy didn't spend more time destroying this. Instead the Marina took more of a thrashing, and it's at least nowhere near as ugly. |

this is ny stance on the allegro this one was in shabby condition the vanden plas starts to grow on you over time the quad allegro lost its unique features at was just using interior from the parts bin the mk1 allegro was the best the mk2 allegro was ok but not as allegro-ey as the mk1 the quartic rules allegro 4wver |

Their are certain types of Allegro that are good and others that are crap. I expect the 1750's are faster than the 1500's and that the later they are, the better built and more reliable they are. Also if you're intending to get one why not go entirely 70's and get one with a vinyl roof. The quad lights are nice although I prefer the cubes. The four door is practical as is the estate, and the two-door version is nice looking. The Vanden Plas is an interesting and extremely British car for very little money. What more do you want Clarkson!!?? |
