Wow! What a wonderful set of photographs, bravo! For me a very stylish car and one of my favourite British cars of the period. For some reason it was not very common at the time. That's why so many photos of such high quality are to be welcomed. |

An attractive car, indeed. It was sadly uncompetetive with the more popular Ford Consul, Hillman Minx and Vauxhall Victor as it was a relatively expensive car. |

I took my driving test in a Standard Vanguard Vignale Estate car. Its plate was WED48. Don’t know what that would fetch now! |

I guess I'm in the minority but it looks bland. Not what I think of with adjectives like stylish and attractive. |

I didn't know that the problem with this car was the high price. The previous version of the Standard Vanguard should not have had that problem. It was very popular even in Spain. |

The Vanguard Phase III Vignale Saloon was tested by “The Motor” in 1959. It cost £1147 including taxes. The 1959 Series V Farina Oxford DeLuxe cost £844. The same source gives the price of a 1959 Ford Consul as £781. My view would be that the Vanguard, with four on the floor and a 2.1 litre engine was less overpriced than a comparison of the numbers may suggest, as the Oxford was only 1.5 litres, and the 1.7 litre Ford only had a three speed gearbox. The Humber Hawk was £1261 according to the same source. -- Last edit: 2025-04-01 14:03:51 |
