It would have been hilarious in this scene if all of a sudden "Mother" popped up in that old Model A and tried to run down Lila. But then it wouldn't have been scary or foreboding (as Hitchcock wanted)...it would have been just funny and ridiculous. A very foreboding and decrepit car for a foreboding and decrepit place. Superb creepy atmosphere created by the master of creepy! Was this at one time Norman's father's old Model A...or did Mommy take up driving before she became a Mummy? |

Notice the upper structure has been removed as well as the hood. Wonder whatever happened to it. For that matter, I wonder what happened to all the vehicles featured in the story. -- Last edit: 2012-07-16 04:16:53 |

I'm sure Hitchcock found this old relic on the lot somewhere and wanted it used on the "Psycho" set for exactly what was shown. He possibly found it in the condition shown and it made it that much more "perfect" for the Bates motel set. As for the other cars used in the movie...I'm sure they were on the lot too and available for use in whatever movies or TV shows that needed them. Over the years I'm sure they were either sold off or junked, once they got old enough and/or were wrecked/trashed in a movie/show. If any still exist today they'd be worth that much more just because they were used and shown in the classic thriller "Psycho". But, I doubt any still exist. It'd be awesome if by some miracle this old '28 Model A was saved and somebody restored it...but it looks like it was ready for the scrap yard even back then. |

Commander--if you see this, It's been a couple years since I've watched my "Psycho Legacy" DVD set...which is a special documentary on the whole "Psycho" franchise--going through each film and loaded with special features. One of the features is a tour of the Bates Motel--where the house and motel now sit on the Universal backlot today--as they were originally in different places on the lot when the movies were filmed. I've recently been going through the series and the special documentary DVD again. Janet Leigh's original 57 Ford is with the set now...and I'd forgetten that this old 1928 Model A is too! The one on the set today is a little more "put together" than what was shown here back in 1960--including an upper structure and hood...but maybe the old Ford had more to it but Hitch made it look more decript than it really was for the movie? Or maybe one like it was later found and put on the set to make it more "original" when the tour goes through. Either way it is jokingly referred to as "Mother's car" and it's still stitting behind the motel in its proper place. -- Last edit: 2012-10-06 19:30:45 |

From what I've seen: http://tsaxlady.blogspot.com/2008/08/universal-studios-hollywood.html it looks more like a Ford Model TT or something pickup truck. The one in the picture looks like a sedan. |

This could be...I don't know? It may not be the same one from the movie...just something similar that they could use on the set as "Mother's Car", along with Janet Leigh's Ford Custom. I've just seen it advertised or said to be the old Bates' vehicle that Lila originally saw behind the motel when sneaking up to the house. But, as I earlier stated the one in the main pic, from the movie, looks pretty "abandoned" and decrepit--while the one on the set now-days looks to be in pretty good shape. So, whether it's the exact same kind used in the movie or not...it's probably not the exact vehicle used either way. I doubt that one still exists. -- Last edit: 2013-11-07 06:28:00 |

It either belonged to Norman's father or his mother |
