This car is an important part of the movie, it clearly is a 5 star rating.

Maybe not "Clearly", but it could be, yes. This 5-star rating is somewhat difficult to define :D

"1949 Buick Roadmaster. Straight 8. Fireball 8. Only 8,985 production models. Dad let's me drive slow on the driveway. But not on Monday, definitely not on Monday."

Although it may not be up there with the DeLorean and James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 in terms of famous movie cars, this Buick plays an important role in the story, apart from them travelling across America in it, when Charlie tries to drive it without permission as a teenager, it causes his father to fall out with him, and he loses out on his father's fortunate because of it. His father leaves three millions in his will to Charlie's long lost autistic older brother Raymond, who lives in a mental institution and doesn't understand the concept of money, while all Charlie gets is the Buick.

If someone remember the movie, in my opinion this car is rather a 4**** than a 5***** vehicle. Certainly it's showed along most part of the movie but I think it doesn't get the 'icon character' that, in my opinion, must gets 5***** vehicles. It is not 'the reason' of the movie, it is not a 'Herbie' car

No but the car was a central character that brought the brothers together.

If it weren't for the car being parked out front of Wallbrook, Charlie would have never met Ray.

Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise): Knew this car my whole life, only drove it once. It's a 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible. Only 8000 production models made, straight eight - fireball eight. It was the first full year of the Dynaflow transmission. I know it by rote.

(also notice the car next to it, although very little of it can be seen I'm sure that's a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow)

The scene where Charlie meets Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) for the first time:

Susanna (Valeria Golino): I'm sorry, this is not your car, it's my boyfriend's.
Raymond: (speaks in a monotone) Yeah. My dad lets me drive slow on the driveway. I'm an excellent driver.
Susanna: Are you sure that you drive this car?
Raymond: Course, only 28 miles on the odometer since I drove it a week ago last saturday. Should be more than 28 miles.
Susanna: My boyfriend is coming.
Raymond: Course, today's Monday. I always drive the car on Saturday, never drive on Monday.
Charlie: Who is this guy?
Susanna: He just jumped into the car.
Charlie: Yeah, well he can jump out.
Raymond: I'm an excellent driver.
(Charlie gets him out and gets into the driver's seat himself)
Charlie: Why'd you let him get in? This is not a toy.
Susanna: He says he drives this car.
Raymond: Dad lets me drive slow on the driveway every saturday. Course, the seats were orignally brown leather, now they're pitiful red.
Charlie: You know, these seats were brown leather. You know this car?
Raymond: I know this car.
Charlie: How do you know this car?
Raymond: Definetely know this car, it's a 1949 Buick Roadmaster straight eight, fireball eight. Only 8095 production models. Dad let's me drive slow on the driveway, but not on Monday, definitely not on Monday.
Charlie: Who's your dad?
Raymond: Sanford Babbitt. 10961 Beechcrest Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Charlie: That's my address. What is it with this guy? Hey! Who's your mother?
Raymond: Eleanor Babbitt. Died January 5th 1965 after a short illness.
Charlie: Who the hell are you?
Raymond: (looking at his watch) Uh-oh. 13 minutes to Judge Wapner, The People's Court. What you are witnessing is real, the participants are not actors...
Charlie: Hey, I'm talking to you! Bruner, who is this guy?
Dr. Bruner: Raymond is your brother.

It looks like more than one car was used. Notice the difference here (the scene where Charlie lets Raymond drive on the casino driveway) from the car in the 3rd thumbnail, the engraved letters BUICK EIGHT have been painted black and the Road Master letters are slanted instead of flat:

Finally, I think this definetely deserves 5 stars for both its key story role and it being driven throughout the film. It not being like Herbie doesn't matter in this case :p [:kiki]

I've got exactly the same car as a 1/18 model. Sadly some parts are missing and I disassembled it and replaced it with a black Buick.

Either the book is based on an earlier script, or there's a major mistake: in the novel it's stated this is a '62...

I think when this film was first released on home video, there was an introduction by the CEO of Buick at the time where he said something about how proud they were to be part of the film, etc.

Illustrating the famous British obtuseness in turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse, then. You can hardly say that the Buick effort is a thing of elegance.
