first version, pre 1972. By the red colour I'd say 1969-1971. @walter: do you know which logo this car has on its engine? Not the four rings. -- Last edit: 2008-09-25 21:37:59 |

Officially it was Auto-Union Audi 60. Or am I wrong ? |

Auto-Union was used for the two-stroke version (F-102), the four-stroke engined models were just Audi. They appeared after Mercedes-Benz had bought over Auto-Union. This Audi could be a 60, 72, 75, 80 or 90... Maybe Walter could help us ? |

Not really, it's predecessor, the F 102 (nearly same body, but with two-stroke-engine), was a DKW. When the new engine came, the used only the name Audi, for the first time after the war again. With this "name-badging" they want to get rid of the association, the people had with DKW = ancient and stinking two-stroke-technology. After 1969 up to 1985 all cars of the Audi AG (the last NSU's until 1973 and 1977, too) had "Audi NSU Auto Union" on their chassis-number-plate. In 1985 it was changed to "Audi AG". |

It is strange that Audi 60 registration papers indicate manufacturer to be 'Auto Union'. Also Wikipedia says: "The model was classified internally as the F103 and sold as simply the "Audi" (the name being a model designation rather than the manufacturer, which was still officially Auto Union), but later came to be known as the Audi 72. Developments of the model were named for their horsepower ratings and sold as the Audi 60, 75, 80, and Super 90. These models sold until 1972." |

@Raul, not only the Audi 60, also these cars were made by "Audi NSU Auto Union", too: /vehicle_45446-Audi-Quattro-Typ-85Q-1983.html /vehicle_31280-Audi-100-Typ-44-1984.html /vehicle_85290-Audi-200-Typ-44-1984.html /vehicle_188309-Audi-90-Typ-81-1985.html |

And they continued with the DKW-systematic after the F 103: /vehicles_make-Audi_model-F104.html The first Audi 100 C1 had still DKW-/Auto Union-based spare-part-numbers. Later on it was changed to the VW/Audi-systematic (9 ciphers in groups of 3, sometimes followed by one or two letters). Audi-spec-parts started with "8". -- Last edit: 2008-09-25 22:13:00 |

Ok, thanks for the infos. I think I understand now. Auto-Union was just official 'technical' name but advertising, magazines and everything else used the name 'Audi'. |

Yes, only "Audi" counts. The other names had to be forgotten very fast, this was the official Audi-opinion. They were ashamed of their history. After 1969, especially after Mr.Piech had been active, they were very strict about that. This is the reason, why several hardcore-NSU-freaks still hate Audi (VW, too), and will never buy an Audi as an all-day-car. In the company-name the three other names had to be a longer time for juristic reasons, for example because of the Wankel-patents, which were given by NSU. So the first Wankel-Mazda's had the NSU-logo on their engines. I don't know how long, but for several years (perhaps still today?) |

Shall the white one on the main pic be a police car? |
