I think this is a 1940 model. My guess is a Limited Phaeton [81C].

Are you sure it is a Series 80? There were six different Buick phaetons in 1940 (Special 41C, Super 51C, Century 61C , Roadmaster 71C and two Limiteds - 80C and 81C). How does one tell them apart?

It seems that the position of the spare wheel can be used as a distinguishing feature: on smaller models, due to their shorter wheelbase, it is mounted relatively higher. There is also a slight difference in the cover trim.

As far as I know, Series 50 Super and 70 Roadmaster had a new body for the 1940 model year, without sidemounts.

I agree with Fortengo : the sidemounts were placed much higher-above hood line- on all other phaetons than on the Limited Phaeton due to their shorter wheelbase. So I stay with 1940 Buick Series 80 Limited Convertible Phaeton model 81 C.I go for an 81-C ( trunkback) since only 7 80-C's ( flatback) were produced versus 250 81-C's. Another point to make is that the sidemounts were standard on the Limited ,but accessory on the other series.Since they had become very expensive at the time many of the four lower series were not equipped with those.

Beautiful car. "Phaeton," in Buick's dictionary of this period, means "four-door convertible." The use of the word "convertible" in addition to the proper term "phaeton" is redundant, I believe.

In Buick speak it is a Convertible Phaeton.
