Typical from Africa. Many VW buses produced in Brasil had the fuel arrival in plastic instead of iron, so with the heating, the fuel was leaking in engine and the bus put fire. On the raod Kinshasa-Matadi (400 km), there were lots on the side burned. Some were restored, but not repainted, what give this ugly vieuw. -- Last edit: 2008-08-02 16:36:29 |

By bumper and winkers looks like German VW Transporter T2a. But niche on the front was probably for radiator for water cooled engine mounted in Brasilian T2. -- Last edit: 2008-08-02 19:19:38 |

Why mounted in Brazil? If the movie was made in South Africa, it's quite surely a ZA-made one. |

This is most likely a ZA-made one, amongst which fires in the engine bay were not uncommon due to high heat and the battery mounted there. Many ZA-built ones were converted to water-cooled engines (notably Ford Essex V6 3,0 litre, although Toyota 18R and GM 2500 were also popular), and my guess is that this was one of those conversions. It is unlikely that a Brazilian one would have found its way to Southern Africa while the same model was assembled in great numbers here. I can remember only the "Fleetline" - the Type 1 Transporter lookalike sold here in the late seventies as a limited-number celebration model of some sorts - coming from Brazil (IIRC). |
