Riley. Could be a 1929 to 1932 "Brooklands", more likely to be a specially constructed race car on a production chassis. Some of the recognition points associated with the factory cars like the mudguards are not fitted which doesn't help. |

Identified in dialogue as a "Riley Special" |

For the construction of specials the Vintage Sports Car Club, and a lot of the one make clubs, certainly the Bentley Drivers Club for one, insist that the major assemblies come from the parts available from the manufacturer's parts bin, or available at the time. So you get MkVI Bentley specials with V8 engines from later cars and Salisbury axles giving higher final drive ratios. No doubt this Riley is similar, usually starting with a "Nine" saloon and fitting a 11/2 or 2 litre engine, and single seater body. |

This is one of the Dixon Sixes, built and raced in period by Freddie Dixon. Period racing cars can be quite convoluted in their histories, but I am reliably informed that the Dixon Sixes were built out of disassembled Grebes - and as such should have an 8'6" wheelbase. So, more than just any old Special (and I say that as an owner of a run-of-the-mill Special!) |
