The Ford Laser, which shares a common platform with the Mazda 323 was produced in Japan. The Laser/323 along with the Ford Telstar/Mazda 626 and the Ford Festiva/Mazda 121 were all produced in a joint venture between Ford and Mazda (whom Ford is a major shareholder) in the early 1980's. The first and second generation 323/Laser where practically identical. The Laser pictured is a 3rd generation (first appeared JDM in 1988, to as late as 1995 in some countries). Two further generations of Laser saw it last until around 2003 when the entire Ford japan FWD platform was replaced by Germans  (mondeo, focus etc). Ford US used the Mazda platform for the Escort although using a 1.9 litre (ford?) engine instead of Mazda's X1.5 and B1.3,1.6,1.8 litre units. Other major difference between Escort and Laser are different Front and Rear end lights etc. |
