Monmouthshire had a strange history where no-one could properly decide if it was part of England or Wales for several centuries - neither really seem to have wanted it. Problem solved in 1974 when it was abolished as a county and then dumped into Wales. Football anecdote (a bit long-winded, but there's a pot of gold at the end) - Monmouthshire's only real football club is Newport County, who were non-league minnows until in 1980 got promoted to the old 4th division, and won the Welsh Cup. This was probably about as prestigious as winning the Luxembourg or Liechtenstein cups, but got them an entry into the European Cup Winners Cup where to much surprise they survived 3 rounds to reach the quarter-finals and drew the mighty Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany. First leg in Germany was 2-2, so winner takes all in the return. I can remember listening to this game on t'wireless - Newport ran them ragged in an epic match but couldn't score and CZJ scraped a goal to win, otherwise Newport would have gone through on away goals to tackle Benfica in the semis. A local band called Flyscreen released a tribute song to that night of hope and finally despair which is perhaps the best football song ever released.
