This is a 1978 (only) Volvo 264 GL or GLE Link to "www.volvotips.com" (page 4 and 13). The colour (130, Silver metallic) was first used in 1977 on the 262 C, and became to be the signature colour for 1978. MY 1979 got different rear lights. For earlier models the GL had a carburettor and the GLE had fuel injection, but for MY 1978 all models had (Bosch CI) fuel injection. The only differences between the GL and the GLE were some extras such as automatic transmission fitted as standard on the GLE. I was very close buying a GL back in the mid 90's, but I backed out when the clutch was that hard to press, for a longer period than a few seconds, my leg became to shake. It wasn't supposed to be like that but I haven't figured out what was wrong. -- Last edit: 2023-03-20 12:15:06 |

Was it called 264 GL (or GLE) or just Volvo GL in the USA ? |

It seems only 264 GL vas available https://www.autopaper.com/images/35579/photo/img0967_221723.jpg . It's from a 1978 U.S. brochure https://www.autopaper.com/images/35579/photo/img0968_221724.jpg from this site Link to "www.autopaper.com" . I'm not sure if I understand this correctly, but I believe Volvo skipped the digits about 1980. Anyway not as early as 1978. |

Yes, 1980 was the year they dropped the numbers and just used the trims levels as models in North America. It was also the first year for the GLE, which was the 6-cylinder model (the last year was 1982, when they introduced the 760GLE in 1983, the 6-cylinder 240 models were dropped in NA). A GL was added to the 4-cylinder line in 1980. |
