Not an early Montero, is it?

Yes, looks to be a first series Mitsubishi Montero.

it looks more like a Isuzu Trooper

It's definitely not a Montero. An easy way to tell is the rear-view mirrors are much different. This is curious because there were first-generation Troopers with both circular and rectangular headlights. The difference must mean a change in engine type, transmission, etc. Does anybody know why?

Circular headlights were 1981-1986
Rectangular headlights were 1987-1991

I think it was just a styling change to keep the model looking fresh and up-to date (5 years is a long time to go without a major refresh). It also represented a switch from old-fashioned sealed beam headlights (round) to more modern halogen bulbs (rectangular).

Thanks for the help! I think we can all agree this is a Trooper.

1984-1986 no way to know if it is a Trooper or Trooper II so it should be listed as a Trooper trim level LS
