This car's role was as the limousine for Daisy & Tom Buchanan (Mia Farrow & Bruce Dern.) It was chauffeur-driven in the movie by the late E. Andrew Mowbray, the Rhode Island collector (and good friend) who owned it at the time. An interesting fact is that the opening scene of the movie -- in which Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston) arrives on the motorboat, greets Tom, they hop into the Rolls Royce and drive up to the mansion -- started here in RI and ended in the UK. Look closely at the shot (posted by ahight) that looks over Andy's shoulder as he's behind the wheel: The house is a mock-up, either painted, or possibly a picture glued, on plywood in the distance. The scene originates on location at Hammersmith Farm in Newport (Jackie Kennedy's childhood home), and that's where the fake house was. The scene ends with the car pulling up to the house - actually on a set in England, at (I believe) Pinewood Studios. Is this model actually called a Salamanca de Ville or a Sedanca de Ville? The Salamanca name would be entirely appropriate as he 'invented' the body style, but he called it Sedanca at the time.

It is called a "Permanent Salamanca" in the RR material. i.e., the rear section does not fold down. This car supposedly belonged to August Busch, the brewing magnate. At the time it was in the movie it only had about 14,000 original miles on it. The interior in the back was completely original, light grey broadcloth I seem to remember but it could have been something else. Also...the little flag at the top of this page is incorrect. Its an Springfield-built car.

Not surprisingly, most of the cars are being driven by their owners. The exceptions being the Marmon (incorrectly identified as a Stutz), the Phantom I DC Ascot and the Auburn. I was there in a 1926 Cadillac.

Sadly, a site that carries new commercial content each day rarely can hold onto everything forever, and it seems in this case they're no longer hosting the photo. Of course, it's been years.

As I mentioned some time ago, the site that had posted the picture (I think it was PreWarCar.com) had run out of room for it. Today, I found my copy of a book by a close friend (who has also posted on this site) with the same photo, of Andy's Silver Ghost at Pinewood Studios:

The book is called "Getting Home Alive - Memories of Car Collecting Before it Got Civilized" by Joe Puleo. It's about our misadventures and narrow escapes playing with old cars in the 1970s.
