It was common for Coventry car firms to apply for batches of registrations, so I guess 9600 was simply within a batch and they chose it for this car because it's memorable. - Original 9600 HP (chassis 850002 or 885002 - both are quoted in sources) info here - Replica 9600 HP (chassis 1E21373, 1966 4.2, originally supplied to HK, then lived in Australia before return to UK and recent makeover to replica) info here.
