Why is it listed as 1956 model year on the screen if it's a 1957 model?

Simple error.
Note they also list the make as Cadillac! And no way is that a period VIN.
The data simply does not match the car.

Extra credit! Can anyone decode this VIN?

I ran it through an on-line VIN decoder which came back as an error/invalid check digit.
Noted it is only 16 characters long and should be 17. Tried it with "XXXXXX" for the serial # and it still came back as invalid.
First two characters of "DF" come back with Morocco as country of origin.
The 10th character of "F" would indicate a 1985 model.
That's all I can do.

Good job, Commander 57! I was thinking if the producer of this movie labeled as fake VIN or one of his own :p

Particularly with a missing digit!

Back in the fifties the term VIN number didn't exist. The equivalent back then would be a serial number. I don't know how many digits were used back then.

before VINs were standardized in the the early eighties (1981 I think) VIN numbers were not 17 digits. For instance the VIN on my 65 Mustang has 11 digits

Yes, it varied greatly and the numbers were just called "serial numbers".
Before that, car companies used "motor numbers".

And yes, the VIN standardization was done effective for model year 1981.

"Policy number ABCDEFG" should clue you guys in this is fake and is just random letters and numbers generated for a scene that has half a second of screen time. Not that hard to figure out. Amazes me how many people argue over such obvious things.

With this better picture, I can see this car is fitted with 283 CID Fuel Injection version :)
