I can't put thoughts into the heads of the artists, but I wonder if they had a plot requirement for the flat roof over the cab? Early d/d buses had to have the short top deck as the construction and use regulations limited the weight over the front axle, probably since there was no power steering to help the driver. As a result, the Routemaster would have been an anachronism, the original design of course having a full length top deck. Most of the Regents did as well, but as it was a design that originated in the late twenties, it just about scrapes in.
