Real plate. "1G" suggests '84.

Inscription on the trunk at the second picture provided by ahight states Rabbit. Cabriolet name was introduced in couple of years later.

really? well, indeed it is not the first one with Rabbit badge, but on the previous one seen it was said that it was maybe just a badge added by the owner: /vehicle_58431-Volkswagen-Cabriolet-Typ-17.html

The other one is an 86+, so i think the badge was just added. I checked with a guy that has an '84 and he claims 84 was the last year of Rabbit badge and 85 was the first of just Cabriolet. I'm not sure of any visual differences. Can anyone confirm that.

I thought an 82. Our Neighbors have I think an 83 Mercury Cougar with a 1M plate. Do you know when we started this license plate sequence?

I had a 1980 Rabbit Convertible with a California plate starting with "1A" so it's likely that it's an 82 model. And yes, the convertible was first sold as a Rabbit model before being called a Cabriolet. I think then name change came about when the second-gen Golf range came out in the US.

The seven numbers/letters sequence started in 1980 with 1A. My parents had a '84 Sentra with a 1J, and a '86 Taurus with a 1R. The 1G on the Rabbit is close to the 1J on my parent's Sentra. Thats how I came to the guess of '84 for the Rabbit.

It's a 1983 or 1984 triple-white Rabbit Convertible, Wolfsburg Edition (without it's WE badges). The Wolfsburg Edition Rabbit Convertible is the only one with that style of white interior, white fender flares, white "Tarantula" wheels, white top, and white boot. The regular Alpine White model did not come with those features.

1980-1984 = Rabbit Convertible
1985-1993 = Cabriolet (Golf Cabriolet in Canada, 1988-1993)
1979-1993 = Golf Cabriolet (outside North America)

An '85 Cabriolet will have bumper over-riders with a "Cabriolet" badge and updated "Volkswagen" badge.
