Riley Nine. More research needed. |

I do not think that this is a genuine 1930s Riley Sprite or Imp, but may be a very neat replica made from a Nine saloon. -- Last edit: 2021-08-23 15:40:46 |

From this the bonnet looks longer, there may be six cylinders under there. Since I am inexpert in the nuances of this marque we need further brain cells. |

I do not claim any possible expertise in Riley models but the concern I have is that the seating position should be a lot nearer the back axle for a two-seater. I agree it just might be a rather good looking modern replica built on a period Riley saloon chassis. |

Found it, I think! It looks identical to this actual car, so likely to be a modern replica, with only the checkered flag badge on the scuttle to tell them apart... "Riley 14/6 six-cylinder chassis with Gamecock body and cycle wings. This car took part in the Alpine Trial this year. http://rileyrob.co.uk/specs/14-6/alpine-gamecock/ It seems that perhaps 10 examples were built, but probably less. The competiton cars are: 1933 - ADU27 - 44T1733 1933 - ADU28 - 44T1734 1933 - ADU29 - 44T1735 1934 - KV5691 - 44T? 1934 - KV5692 - 44T? 1934 - KV5693 - 44T? (KV5694-6 were 12/6 TT racing cars, later the White Riley and MPH prototypes) Replicas also exist. -- Last edit: 2021-08-26 17:44:20 |

See also this linked page (with a picture which won't open) - "This particular car is a faithful replica of the Alpine Gamecocks that raced in the 1930s. It was apparently built in the 1980s by a team including Barry Gillies, who at the time owned ADU 28, a genuine 1933 Alpine Gamecock, and so the body was copied directly from a genuine car. The chassis number is 44T1423, a number which is slightly earlier than the 1733-5 numbers of the genuine cars, and there are some suggestions that the car has or had a 12/6 engine. However, as the original trio were probably fitted with 12/6 engines and then re-engined as 14/6 models for the 1934 Alpine Rally, this does not make this replica less authentic. ADU28 and ADU29 both still exist. The fate of the original ADU 27 is currently unclear." The 1980s replica may wear ADU 27 plates We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided RILEY OTHER 1934 Registration number: ADU 27 Body type: Tourer Colour: Black Date of first registration: January 1934 but unclear if this is really the original ADU 27 or a creative re-reg. |

My understanding of the description on rileyrob's web pages is that ADU 27 is the 'authentic' replica with historical plates. If chassis number 44T1423 was a genuine 12/6 chassis I guess the DVLA was persuaded at the time to re-issue the ADU 27 registration, even if chassis numbers did not match exactly, or if chassis numbers were actually known? I did read that Riley regularly swapped bodies and chassis at the time, so it could be argued that ADU 27 was a possible registration. Pictures that have the broken link here... That photo was taken in Italy in 2010. ADU 29 has been untaxed since 2012 and is marked as exported, so it probably lives in Italy and probably is the car in the film. |

ADU 29 was sold by MBM Motorstorica s.r.l. Brescia, Italy. http://www.motorstorica.com/eng/SOLD/RILEY-GAMECOCK-6-14-Ex-T.C.-Griffiths More detailed history of the Riley 14/6 Gamecock competion cars here http://jimf.je/riley-works-alpine-trials-team-cars/ The company had retained at least three of the successful 1933 12/6 cars and for 1934, replaced their 12hp engines and manual gearboxes with 14hp six cylinder engines and “Preselecta” gearboxes, changed the axles for centre-lock rather than bolt-on wheels, ground the chassis numbers off, stamped new ones and re-registerd the cars as : ADU 27, 28 and 29. A fourth car, a 14hp Lynx, registered ADU 30 was entered for Miss Champney and may have used the chassis of the fourth 1933 car. The late Barrie Gillies acquired ADU 28 in 1961 and the car remains in his family; Ian Stainburn owned and rebuilt ADU 29 in the early 1970s and now owns ADU 27. -- Last edit: 2021-08-27 11:46:01 |
