Simply known as Sunbeam 3 Litre. I have no idea who supplied the body, as many of them were coachbuilt; fifty years ago a master at school had one with a Weymann saloon body. Lovely car to work on; the engine compartment had an alloy floor to keep muck off the engine!

This is not the car commonly known the the '3 liter Super- Sports', complete with twin cam engine (the first production twin cam engine in the world). It is a Sunbeam 20 (20.9 RAC hp)- the overhead valve, 75 x 110mm engine of which just happened to have exactly the same dimensions as the much more exciting twin cam. The 20 engine produced about 60bhp, whilst the twin cam made 90. In fact, although 250 'Super Sports' were produced in 1926 after that year a mere 3 or 4 were completed annually, and none at all by 1930. The 20 was a successful model. Similar in appearance to the 16, it had a much larger engine (2916cc against 2035cc) and had a 10ft 4in wheelbase: it could get up to about 70mph. The chassis cost a substantial £590 in 1927, so even a modest coupe like this one would have been priced at about £750 complete. Some 200 x 20's were sold in 1930- down from 700 the previous year. Such cars were major victims of the Great Depression. Incidentally the 2980cc quoted is wrong for any Sunbeam as built. Probably this was the figure after a re- bore at some time earlier in its life. This red and cream colour scheme is possible but unlikely for the car in 1930. Riley made some cars with this combination and bright colour schemes were certainly to be found amongst expensive cars- but they were not very common. Cream was more popular than white though. In those days white soon turned to cream after exposure in the sun, so it was as well to paint the car cream in the first place!
