The director (Roger Donaldson) must have had a soft-spot for these 73-87 (-91) Rounded-Line generation trucks to feature two of them in the same movie, both of which are used in "hero" roles.

The film shows some nice under body views of the trucks, displaying their clean and tidy under carriage, designed specifically for off road use. Powertrain and driveline components (the truck’s vital organs) were tucked neatly up under the vehicle to increase obstacle clearance and to reduce the chances of snagging a driveline component on an obstruction. Under body protection (steel plates placed over vital organs) were available for further protection if needed.

A representation of the Chevy vs. Ford (with the Ford’s powertrain and driveline system precariously exposed)

Hey folks, someone was talking to me about this movie the other day and about my truck. I own the crew cab from the movie. The one that survived anyways. My truck is the one that drives through lava and the one that drives into town on all 4 flats. They lit the truck on fire with rubber cement for the lava scene. when we got it the paint was totally burnt except for the places we peeled the cement off. We got it in 97 from a company in tucson that sells cars from different movie companies. The dodge van was also at this lot. Just wanted to correct some things that i've seen on here. it's not a 85, it's actually an 87. it's also not a k-30, its vin designates it as a v-30. It is one ton. It has the full float 14 bolt in the rear and the dana 60 up front. When we bought it, The truck didn't come with the original forest service service bed, The company sold that off so they tossed a regular fleetside long bed on the truck. It was a blue bed on a burnt green truck. My dad the original buyer painted the truck white before there was a slight movie fallowing. The burnt green is still under the white and is showing through a little. the interior is still original green and the bottom of the foot wells are burnt still where the paint got hot. just thought I would let some people know it's still kicking around and I baby the hell out of it. Its my movie star in disguise. If anyone knows where I can get forest service green for a new paint job let me know.

Interesting. A V30. The C/K designation went to the new GMT400/480 which was built in ‘87 if I recall. I though V/R designation started for ‘88? I guess it was indeed ‘87 if this fella has one.

Edit: yep it was ‘87 for the V/R designation starting. It lasted until 1991 being built concurrently with the new GMT400/480/455.

@87crewcab. We have a forum as well: /forum.php (the link is 2nd from right at top of this page). You can get PMs or DMs whatever people call them now. Might help ;) you just have to register over there as it is on a different server I believe.

[Image: truck1.jpg] If that link works, it's the picture of the truck when we got it. Its a couple weeks later and all the cement was off (mostly) leaving the good paint. Thats why it has good paint below the burnt stuff. And we took off part of the bumper because it was flimsy and bent. and you can see the blue bed. back then my dad couldn't stand it so he painted it white. But it's the OG truck.

I'm glad I check back on some of these pages, always great to read Neptune's now classic comment about Donaldson having a spft-spot for this era of truck, and it's great to see the truck survives today and some of the story of the truck in the decades since production ended.

Hello, here are some pictures of the part of the movie when they drive the Chevrolet Crew Cab Custom Deluxe over the lava.
Does anyone know if it's easy to get that truck? :D

If you mean are these trucks easy to secure nowadays? Up here in Canada and the northern U.S states, these trucks are sadly quite rare now. Once upon a time they were everywhere, but they were worked hard in their time, and weren't always considered future classics. Also, snow/rust/road salt has surely taken away a few. Many that survived were modified or turned into bush buggies. These trucks can be found for sale here and there, but clean examples will fetch good money.
