![]() ![]() ![]() Don't exactly know of the initial year for these Cantrell-bodied Station Wagons, but there is a picture of one on Ebay (from 1949, apparently) : Link to "www.ebay.com" |

Only one on the site! A new Studebaker for the Commander! |

Seems to be based on the Studebaker pickup of the same time so since it's exactly a wagon built on the chassis of a truck and has four doors, this could be considered the first SUV. I know the Chevy Suburban counts as well but that only has two doors despite having more than enough room for a pair of rear doors. |

It's actually based on the Studebaker 2R5, 2R6 or 2R11 windshield cowl chassis - roll the dice to find out which one is seen above. J.T. Cantrell & Co. of Huntington Station, New York, used to call them "Suburban" and Studebaker also advertised earlier models as "Suburban Car". But still, that name can't be found on the 11/1952 brochure for "the new all purpose Cantrell station wagon bodies". I'm not sure if they were generally advertised as "new" or if that means they were just new for the 1953 model year. On that note: Isn't it a shame that nobody ever built a used car?? ![]() ![]() |
