Mid 51 plate. Just over 900 Hampshire Countrymen built by Papworth Industries under contract to Austin; factory/workshop was at Papworth Everard in Cambridgeshire. Seems they were made for at least a year after A70 Hereford saloon launch until Hereford Countryman started in late 51 - pretty well identical apart from bigger front grille and new side grilles, plus wood panelling now extended onto upper part of front doors - http://www.austinmemories.com/page8/page32/page32.html -- Last edit: 2014-05-28 14:29:31 |

As well as the 900 Papworths, there were "200 commissioned separately by London agent Car Mart but based on the A70 chassis cab, rather than the saloon. The official Papworths mostly went for export, but the Car Mart variants found a home market as television Outside Broadcast Vehicles, service barges for motorsport teams and hotel taxis.". Which ever this is, it has quarterlights = Sept 49+. |
