Was schweineteuer ist, da meist Sonderanfertigungen.

@for the non-German-speakers: we are talking about the usage and sense of armoured cars.

Aufpassen muß man immer.

@ingo: Yes, you might be right, maybe I made a mistake. Perhaps I should have bought all 17 to open up a scrapyard. Now seriously: I just needed one car that will be working without problems for 4-5 months- not 17 useless wrecks.

@Sandie: Both cars are great suggestions! As you can imagine, my preferred choice would be of course nothing less than the best- which automatically means a Rootes-car and nothing else. But then again, wouldn't it be a sin to use such irreplaceable automotive icons as a profane daily driver?

Ingo DE

2012-08-28 18:09

cl82 wrote as a profane daily driver?

Are you still smoking in your car? Then it's disgusting, not just profane :p

Unfortunately my Vectra was a smoker's car. Although it was cleaned once by a professional vehicle finisher for a lot of money (and by myself some times, too), you can smell it even today, when you open the car :/

cl82 DE

2012-08-28 20:10

Well, I'll try not to smoke in there as I'm planning to hand it to my younger brother when I'm back in TÜ next year. But as the car is a rattling, ten year old lemon made by a manufacturer who hasn't been able to built a single decent car despite 109 years of "experience"( please don't tell M.Pfaffeneder), I could as well smoke in that car; it wouldn't make much difference.

As far as your Vectra is concerned: Have you already tried the old vinegar-trick which was recommended by Oldtimer-Praxis six or seven years ago?

@m.pfaffeneder: Take it easy, you know I exaggerated a bit on purpose. From time to time, they did and still do make some decent cars indeed, but IMHO they could do a much better job. Actually, the majority of the cars Ford built -and not only the Granada- were actually good and sound designs that sadly were sandbagged by cost-cutting measures on the assembly line.

m.pfaffeneder DE

2012-08-29 22:57

Early Fiesta MKV with the fisher price dashboard?

cl82 DE

2012-08-29 23:43

@Sandie: No, sadly not the fisher price-edition, but I had one of these as a rental car in 2004 or 2005. With a curb weight of over 1.2 tons and the 60 hp-engine, it wasn't much of a thrill.
@m.pfaffeneder: Sadly, I don't have any pictures of it yet, but it looks exactly like Link to "upload.wikimedia.org" except the rims and has the already mentioned prehistoric 60 hp 1.3-litre engine and ca. 110,000 km on the clock. It's one of the very last of that series (EZ 05/02), and just like my previous car ( 1993 VW Polo Fox) it was built in Spain. You have to make some compromises if you don't want to spend a lot of money...

Ah, the cast iron chunk from the 60ies (origin GB, or? First used in the Ford Anglia, or?). But somehow unique - this was the last possibility, to identify a car just by the sound of its engine :D

Sandie SX

2012-08-30 13:07

Indeed :D . It was developed from the Kent engine first used in the Anglia in 1959. I don't think there's many companies who have continued to sell the same engine for so long. It was a tough engine, but it could be difficult to work on and it needed regular maintenance. Still used (in a heavily worked over form) in Brazilian Fords.

It sounded awful too.

-- Last edit: 2012-08-30 13:09:18

cl82 DE

2012-08-30 17:30

It still sounds awful today, especially when the valves start clattering, no matter whether regular maintenance took place or not. Please forgive me, Sandie, but I have to disagree as far as the "toughness" of the engine is concerned. Despite the long production run, the camshaft often causes serious problems. Of course, the engine might nevertheless appear as "tough"- if you compare it to the contemporary British competition with the crunchy sills.

m.pfaffeneder DE

2012-08-30 18:50

@cl82: You´re right, the camshaft is a problem of this engine. But over all, the Fiesta is very reliable.

cl82 DE

2012-08-30 22:55

Yes, it's not a bad car- otherwise I wouldn't have bought one.

Ingo DE

2012-09-02 12:10

But you know, that it has absolute no value? :p

I've asked my wife, who works in an insurance's claim department for car accidents, what are the most worthless cars, she had to pay. She said "old Fiestas". For a crashed Golf II, Kadett E, Astra F, even a Corsa A or a Nissan Sunny or Fiat Tipo you'll get a few € more, when the insurance of the guilty driver has to pay it (of couse none of these cars have an own full insurance).

cl82 DE

2012-09-02 17:40

Once again: Believe it or not, but I bought the car exactly BECAUSE there's not much value to be lost. As I already mentioned, I just needed a car for a couple of months, just a cheap vehicle, not a financial investment for the evening of life. Is it really that hard to understand? Besides, your wife probably means the two models which are a bit older (from the 90s); they have indeed absolutely no value. And Kadett Es, Corsa As and Fiat Tipos in every-day traffic are a thing of the past; I haven't seen one of these in ages, not even in bad condition. A propos loss of value: I don't want to be impolite or mean, but I hope you know what lies ahead of your car.

Ingo DE

2012-09-02 17:55

Oh, sure, yes, I'm absolutely aware, that I don't have a chance to sell my Vectra for a good price. I had known the same, when I had bought the predecessor, my Omega via the VEBEG (who would ever pay money for an old big Opel in NATO-olive? Noone). I was never ever interested in the resale values of all cars, I ever had. The K 70 will never be sold and for all other cars, the all-day-vehicles, I've always calculated a residual value of "0". So when I ever got some avail, when I gave them away, I've seen that as a 100% profit.

Let me remember, how rich I became with the resale values of my cars... Well:
- the 1999 Omega I've swapped in 2011 with a visit of Dracula's Castle, when I will be someday in Romania
- the 1987 Passat Variant GT I gave away in 2004 for free to the freaks of the http://www.passat-kartei.de/
- in spring 1999 I've sold my 1984 Audi 80 SC for 50 D-Mark [ca.25 €) to Siberia
- in spring 1997 I've sold my 1972 NSU 1200 C for 300 D-Mark (ca.150 €) to fellows from my NSU-Club
- in summer 1995 I've sold my 1981 Toyota Celica XT -VIN-no 000027 or 00047 !- for 300 D-Mark to West Africa

@ingo: VIN-no 000027 or 00047? :wow: I understand that you would never sell your K70, but maybe you should've kept that Celica (and that NSU). On the other hand, you probably did the right thing because it would have been quite inconvenient to keep the cars in storage over all these years.

Ingo DE

Nightrider wrote Do you want to be buried in it?

At best with my literature collection, too. There are too many legacy hunters among my friends. Those who become green with envy, when I tease them with "I cannot image having a happy life as K 70-freak without having the NSU-prototype-press-kit or without having a sales brochure with a South Vietnamese dealer's stamp". It's so much enviousness in the world :(

@cl82: yes, such a low number. But I always have said: no scattering! I've seen some freaks, who became a hostage of their own cars and their own collections. No money in the pocket, no food in the fridge, no gas in the heating, but 30 classic cars. In fact these classic cars, which were nice first-owner-precioses, when they got them, became wrecks, because there was no money left for maintenance and preservation. It starts with the lack of money for storage.

Ingo DE

2012-09-03 20:36

P.S.Once I had the chance to get the oldest existing VW Golf. But again: no scattering! So I let it go to a freak from http://www.golf1-ig.de/ There it is in good hands, too.
