Yes, that is a UK plate.

I looked it up on most of the UK plate check sites on the links page and didn't find anything. Either the plate is false or the car was exported years ago and deleted from all the databases.

LUC 585D comes up as a beige "Mercedes 300 Coupe" registered 3 May 1966 on Autotrader. Most other sites blank, but I found this odd combination "Tax Status✗ Expired: 01 Apr 1980, MOT Status✓ Expires: 02 Jan 2019" on another. Googling "Mercedes LUC 585D" found this pic on a Kent car recovery site, and there's a small pic on their main page showing the plate behind the "Vehicle Transportation" sub-heading banner, but it won't open. Intriguing there's another closed pic showing it with a second similar coupe together on their transporter, as if a small collection was being ... um ... collected.

Perhaps it sat in a barn from 1980 until it was restored in around 2018. The restorer MOT'd it to prove that it was roadworthy, but didn't tax it because it was already destined to be exported straight away.

Interesting idea - I can see the logic. Every so often I've stumbled on something with widely different tax and MOT dates a few years apart and wondered why, apart from DVLA data hiccups. It makes sense if you've revived something dormant or resto'd a wreck to MOT first (in case it fails and needs more work??) before you tax it. If you're a selling garage, you'd want the MOT as proof of condition, but then don't know how long it'll sit around waiting for a buyer, so you don't tax until a sale happens. In the meantime you can offer test drives etc on trade plates. So in this case, easy to imagine revival from a barn or whatever, then being bought by a foreign buyer so exported without needing to be retaxed.
