HCG829 is described by Alamy as a 1930 8 Litre: https://www.alamy.com/1930-bentley-8-litre-image60138998.html Vintage Bentleys says 1930 6.5 Litre, chassis FR2634, but there may be some confusion: http://www.vintagebentleys.org/carpages/uv3070.php |

8 litre Bentleys, in original condition, had plated radiator shutters, not chicken wire grilles, but this car has been heavily rebuilt in any case. FR is a chassis number series allocated to the 6 1/2 litre cars, not the 8 litre cars. As noted, HCG 829 is the numberplate of chassis FR2634. It appears that this chassis may originally have been registered as UV 3070. The chassis does not appear in the 1982 edition of the Bentley Drivers Club “Members and their Bentleys”. This is the earliest edition that I have. HCG 829 attached to chassis FR2634 appears, owned by the same person, continuously from 1985 to 2006 in the members’ records of the BDC, with the exception of 1987, for unknown reason. This chassis is identified by its owner, throughout these years, as a 6 1/2 litre. Since he owned, concurrently, another 6 1/2 litre, a 3 1/2 litre, a MkVI, and an S3, I would suggest that he knew one type of Bentley from another. The car does not appear in the 2009 members list, nor since. Alamy and other such, are more interested in shutter speeds and f nos, whatever they are, than correctly identifying the subjects of their pictures. I have done the best I can to nominate this chassis, but there may have been some numberplate swapping that I have been unable to spot, however, I think it’s a 6 1/2. UV is a London CC series, commencing June 1929. HCG is a County Council of Southampton (ie Hampshire) series commencing April 1949. -- Last edit: 2021-03-15 11:24:26 |

That is the correct capacity for the 6 1/2 litre cars. |
