Surely you don't want that horrible thing?

CarChasesFanatic ES

Every SUV is going to be horrible for you i dont know how much we should take into account your opinion towards them :p

G-MANN UK

2007-12-30 18:52

Forgive for thinking a lot of them are plain pointless (especially the crossover ones) and many people only buy them because they want big, imposing, high-up cars to give them a physical advantage over ordinary road cars. It's true, a lot of them are a total waste of space because they are only driven around cities. I'd support a ban on SUVs in places like London and other British cities.

CarChasesFanatic ES

2007-12-30 18:56

But in that i agree, i love SUVs and i'd buy one for the reasons you say, but nowadays SUVs are meant to so, they are not meant to go offroad, not them all, we know which ones are the best off roaders yet, Land Rover, but the rest? they are only to be shown off.

G-MANN UK

2007-12-30 19:14

Surely by now people can understand the anti-SUV argument? If you don't NEED one, you shouldn't buy one! And in a small, intensely built-upon country like England (which is hardly anything like America), most people have no use for a 4x4 at all, most people don't own any land. They used to be a novelty that occaissionally came in handy to certain people, now they are everywhere and I can't stand it. Most of them are so ugly!

G-MANN UK

I mean you could argue that exotic sports cars and luxury cars are equally unnecessary and wasteful but at least those things are prohibitively priced so you don't see them everywhere.

That's to generalize a lot, there are people that dont buy sports cars to go fast either, simply because the speed limit in the majority of the countries doesnt allow them to, so i dont see why if you are not using one you should not buy one, if you like it... but anyway this been discussed many times now and as in everything there will always be people in favour and people against.

What gets me is the way SUVs have been marketed, and the way people mindlessly follows trends, people have been drawn into thinking that these things are useful for families, when they aren't, not with families who live in towns and suburbs. Look at people who own a BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Merc ML, Lexus RX, or any other of the ones made by companies who make a big range of road cars, their needs would be equally served by the sedans and the estates that the company also offers. Why buy this thing instead of a Passat?

There was a time when if someone needed an offroader, they'd get a Land Rover or something like that, these "soft-roaders" didn't exist. Now 4x4s are fashionable, other companies want a piece of the action, but the actual need for them hasn't increased.

Ah yes i didnt see that, anyway by this i see both of us agree but i see it in a way and you see it in another, i mean, i agree about that you say that any other sedan would equally serve its needs, but i still dont think its a reason why someone cant buy a SUV, you feel higher on the road which givwes you a feeling of security and they are more "fashion" in the mean that they look gorgeous and pople always stand looking at them by how big they are.

And that about a time when only Land Rover was there for people really needing a SUV its true, and that nowadays brands attract people with SUVs is true as well, but then its companies' fault, SUV are not an special instrument certain people who need to go off road buys, but another type of car you have in the market to buy.

Sorry, but that's not a good reason to buy one, those reasons for buying SUVs are idiotic. It's a bit like people who buy guns to feel safe or for the coolness and feeling of power that guns have.

Well might sound stupid but that is it, and those are the reasons why people with money mainly owns one, everytime i see a family on the road with a XC90 or any other SUV of the same type i always doubt they are going to go offroad, simply because the car has not been made for it mainly, but because they make people show their status, i remember the case of an old friend of mine whose family was hesitating between a Q7 or a XC90, but i can promise you they were not going to go offroad at all, they were just buying it because they had money and could afford it, so they wanted a car that stands out, and a SUV does, even more if its luxury.

Anyway you say those are no reasons to buy one but why would there have to be any? no? if it is a question of taste, in my opinion of course.

G-MANN UK

2007-12-30 20:15

Of course I know all this, I still think it's stupid. And it's an issue of taste, these SUVs don't appeal to me at all, it's like I don't find Paris Hilton attractive (and I'm not gay or anything).

I know my opinion doesn't really matter here, and I don't wish to start up the SUV argument again, but I would advise not to ahight. Mainly becuase gas costs $3.75 a gallon these days, and it's just throwing away your money completely. I don't know the MPG for this car, but I'm sure that the Passat's is a lot better, (even though this is a "crossover" and therefore is supposed to get better mileage). Besides, what would you use it for anyway? If you do not off-road in your Passat or your VW Bus (which I'm sure you don't in either) then what do you need this monstrosity for? Just not really worth it in my opinion. But of course I can't decide for you how you live your life, it's just my two-cents on the issue ;)

It's still on my list. I sat in the new Jetta Sportwagon the other day and loved that too. The prices are slightly better than the Tiquan. So, once the TDI wagon comes out I might actually look at getting one of those. We've also been looking at the 4-door Jeep Wrangler Limited and then checking into getting a pass to drive on the beach at Carolina Beach. But then we've also been looking at getting either a used Mustang vert, Solstice or Crossfire vert. So really, we don't know what we want...and luckily we don't have the money to waste on a new car! :)

Taxi...this actually get's similar gas mileage as my current Passat (Tiquan = 19city/26highway or 18city/24highway for 4-motion)and most of the models of the Tiquan don't come with 4-motion, so really it's a tall Jetta wagon. One of the drawbacks between this and my current Passat is having to buy premium gas which is why I started checking out the Jetta. If you've seen some of the roads in NC having the ground clearance would be helpful. I actually drove my Passat to check out a house for my partner who's a realtor and we almost got stuck in an area of Leland, NC on a dirt road that I just prayed the holes in the road didn't tear something off the bottom of the car.

Hey, you're very lucky! I just have turned our prices in your measures: today a liter of Diesel (regular fuel, too, the Diesel-price is nearly identical now) at our local gas station costs 1,39 € (=2,056 $). Some weeks ago it was even up to 1.60 € (= 2,37 $). So it's 7,78 $/gallon now and we had 8,97 $/gallon.

And in the UK it's even more expensive, in Scotland more than in England! In Holland fuel is also more expensive, but Diesel is cheaper than in Germany.

I have actually driven through NC extensively, and not long ago either (late 2006), and we did just find in our FWD Camry sedan. I don't really understand this notion people have that you must have tons of ground clearence and 4WD when driving on a dirt road. Even so, there are better alternatives to a SUV for this anyway. There are many rugged 4WD station wagons (and even sedans) on the market now such as the Subaru Outback, Taurus X, or (since you seem to like VW so much) a Passat 4WD wagon. But again that's just my view...

I had a test drive a while back when they introduced the Tiguan into UK. The idea was to replace my Audi A4 Avant, which is not 4wd, as we have a caravan. We thought that the ride was too hard, I did not like the electronic parking brake, and my wife thought that it looked like a taxi.

We still have the A4.

From what i've heard it's the same 4-motion system as on the Passat. The Passat also only gets 18city/26highway...So for taxiguy to say to get a Passat means that he only hates this vehicle because it's being called a "SUV". People that have such a hate for SUV's make me want to go out and buy a Ford Excursion. :) Life's too short to worry so much about what other people drive!

No, because most of the people that see you driving it are naieve about cars and don't know that it's really a Jetta. :D
Though I'm not saying that the opinion of others about your car should really matter anyway, you should get a car becuase you like it, not just to look good to others.

It's not only about the gas mileage ahight (though that is a large issue I have with them) It's also about the sheer size of these monsters. I mean, there is no need for a vehicle that large! (Yes I know that this one isn't too bad in that aspect but a lot of them are). You can get just as much cargo room in a minivan or large station wagon as you can in most SUVs. And if you want towing power go out and find a RWD Buick Roadmaster wagon from the 90s (and yes I know that's not exactly "new" but most of them have very low miles and are in like-new condition since they were mostly owned by older people). These vehicles are just unessesary for almost everyone on Earth... :/

Also, I think the Excursion might get just a little less than 18/26 MPG :D

So you'd rather that I get a larger minivan (which blocks more view when you're behind it) or an old 90's Roadmaster (which probably produces the same pollution than 2 of these Tiguans would) than a small SUV. :??:

Maybe I'll get one and put a lift kit on it so it looks more like this /vehicle_161743-Toyota-Hilux-1992.html
and then never drive it off-road!

Not all minivans are larger, you can get a smaller one like a Mazda MPV or a Plymouth/Dodge from the late-90s (which is before they ballooned up to the size of buses like the new ones) The Roadmaster may be long, and a bit wide, but at least it is not seven feet tall, which is my main problem with cars like this. And as far as gas mileage, the Roadmaster gets at least as good as this thing.

ahight wrote I do find it funny coming from someone that loves Caprices and Crown Vics. Talk about big 'ol boats! :D

I was expecting you to say this, and therefore I am prepared. As I said before, these cars may be long, but they are not nearly as high as an SUV, so they don't block trafic from behind. Also, they get ok mileage compared to this, since they are low-to-the-ground sedans and therefore much more aerodynamic and efficient. But still I'm not saying those are really efficient, I certainly wouldn't reccomend them for you, (notice that the cars I drive are smaller fuel-effcient Hondas and Toyotas, not those big things) I just like them for their style, luxury, and power, not so much their efficiency. Though, I must say they are still better than most SUVs.

How much is the Tiguan's allowed towing-weight?

@G-Mann: for me the only reason to decide pre-SUV, would be, if I had to tow often big trailers.

The Tiguan can tow 2,200 lbs (998 kg) of braked trailer. However the Touareg can tow up to 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg) of braked trailer.
So if you had, say a trailer of some kind, and it weighed more than 2,200 lbs, the Touareg would be the obvious choice ...
