It's a Malibu

With an Oldsmobile badge - Cutibu.

For non-specialist - this is a "stopgap" Oldsmobile Cutlass made using the Chevrolet Malibu's N-body, identical for the most part, made 1997-99 to bridge the gap between the discontinued multitude of older Cutlass variations and the Alero.

But that's not its real name :??: Under which name was it sold? Just Cutlass, right?

Cutlass, but it's known as "Cutibu" due to the above. It is a joking way to describe the blatant rebadge, whereas GM took pride in making the previous Cutlasses stad out from their "bowtied" brethren (if they had them, not all Oldsmobiles had Chevrolet counterparts).

This car is a Chevy Malibu, not a Cutlass.

You're right, forgot about the light belt + never seen that badge. What happened with it?

Here in Canada, we didn't have all those rebadges back in the late nineties. There were no Olds Cutlass after 1996, We didn't have the Silouhette either, or Custom Cruiser, Bravada, and the 88 rebadged into a Regency for 1997 after the Ninety Eight was discontinued.

The reason for that is that all Oldsmobile dealers in Canada already sold Chevrolet, so there was no need for a Chevy clone by Oldsmobile.

It's the regular Chevrolet Malibu badge of the late nineties. I had one of those as a rental car back thenas my '68 Buick Wildcat was being repaired. I remember that the flasher unit was located in an unusual place in this car, the clicking sound from the flasher came from the passenger side instead of the usual location which is on the driver side near the driver's left foot. And I was surprised to find that such a small detail could be an annoyance (to me at least!).

Any reason for the strange thing rather than a regular bowtie that you know of?

One of the final nails in the coffin of a very proud marque. Why they didn't call the "New"(in 1997)Intrigue the Cutlass is beyond me?? The "Cutlass" name had 'Equity' in the automotive world!! Even my late Mother(far from a "Car Freak" )said then those came out (She saw one on the road, asked me "What's an Intrigue??")"Gee,that's kind of dumb?? Even I know that the mid sized Olds is called a Cutlass??" (As another viewpoint, one of my very best friends is a die hard,"Bowtie" stamped on the forehead Chevy Guy.....he calls that car the "Rent-a-bu"?)

Oh no no, the Cutlass name means "fleet special". It was abused beyond reason and nobody under 95 would drive one. It had to be put to rest.

What "abused" it was there being THREE DIFFERENT CARS all called a "Cutlass",built at THE SAME TIME,in the mid 1980's to mid 1990's.Muddied up the name something awful??(Actually, there was FOUR in 1988!!)To me at least(and I'm not alone!!)the "real" Cutlass at the time was the rear drive "Cutlass Supreme"("Cutlass Supreme Classic" in early 88),the others I've always called a Ciera,a Calais or a "Front Drive" Supreme. As for being an "old persons car",oddly enough, where I live it's ridiculously popular among younger males, who seem to like jacking them up like a 4x4(most not very well, very unsafe),and putting (dumb looking!!)26+ inch wheels on them?? (I go a "different way"....I prefer speed & power....and a 403,a 425 or a 455 just fits sooooooo well in there?.....)

I don't like modding of any kind - don't fix if it ain't broke, and if it's a bad car, discard. The "modding" scene has little to do with popularity among new car buyers.

PS. I meant the same about abused. Besides, being Polish, I don't find the name sounding too good to my ear... What Olds should've done though was keep 88 and 98 designation, i.e. 88 Intrigue and 98 Aurora.

It was just a special logo for the Malibu. The 2000-2005 Monte Carlo also has a unique badge.

In 1988, there were even 5 Cutlass models, Cutlass Calais, Custlas Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser (I know it was based on the Ciera), Cutlass Supreme (fwd) and Cutlass Supreme Classic (rwd).

And I agree with you, only the RWD Classic was interesting.

Interesting? For shock value perhaps, it was a downsized G-body, looked rather awful, especially in coupe form.

My grandfather had a '78 Cutlass Supreme and I really liked it, the 1988 model was almost unchanged.

Does anyone recognize that that specific Malibu had a special badge?

And the fact that the 442- one of the most legendary muscle cars ever built...
WAS A CUTLASS? Yas.

1998-2003 due to the blue bowtie. 1997's rear bowtie was white.
