BRD 548 = Reading 1942, BRO was mid-36 (so too early) |

Are you sure that plate is genuine? As I had it listed as 54+ due to the taillights. |

I did raise an eyebrow for a WW2 date but we have a couple of wartime E83Ws, so not impossible. And I'm not sure that a 1960 film would have indulged in the black art of switching plates. But happy to revert if the tail-light dating over-rules this. |

Older vehicles had to have updated tail lights by law at some point. I’ll try to find the date, but well pre 1960 in any case. Therefore not a reliable guide. |

By 1st October 1954 ALL vehicles in use on British roads (except motor cycles) had to have two red reflectors, and two red rear lights indicating the approximate width of the vehicle. Retrospective modifications had to be done, but if you look closely at the light over the numberplate of this old stager you will see that it is a combined numberplate and rear lamp, suggesting retrospective additional side marker lamps added, and commensurate with a 1942 vehicle later modified. The van also has the 1938 to 1946 shape of rear mudguard. That probably confirms its build date of 1942ish. Wartime production of these vans appears to have been more or less continuous, with the following special types built, presumably plus some normal ones. It's funny because that's exactly what the film is about. |

An old friend it seems: |

Correction - 1941 plate as its other sighting. BRD was Sept 39 to July 45, with 482 to 666 issued in 1941. |

Which illustrates nicely the advantage which could be gained from recording numberplates where possible. |
