By the way, why are some of them called Escort Van, some are Escort 35, and others Escort 55 ?

I think Escort 35/55 was British nomenclature and Van was general European name

It's from the weight, I think it might apply outside of the UK, but it's more difficult to be sure. Van is always appropriate if we don't know the specifics.

As far as I can assemble something vaguely comprehensible, the story is:
- Mk1 vans - simply known as 6cwt (1100cc) and 8cwt (1300cc), available in Standard or Deluxe trims. Enjoy the simplicity of this system, its only anomaly was a 6cwt with 1300cc automatic option
- Mk2 vans - renamed 30 (1100cc) and 45 (1300cc) in Standard, L and later Custom trims. These seem to be random numbers with no obvious weight equivalents. There was also the option of 1300cc in a 30-badged manual version, still listed with the lower payload (possibly because it had low compression economy engine??). Sept 76 30 was renumbered 35, but 45 stayed 45.
- Mk3 vans - launched as 35 (1.1 or 1.3) and 55 (1.3 or 1.6; 1.6 Diesel added later). All sorts of trim names, including Popular as the new poverty level. My sources run out at this point (which may be a blessing ....)

By this time Ford seemed to have a numbering family - eg Transits with 80, 100 and 120 etc.

Plate info for Mk2/3 often gives these numbers, which is probably how we've got examples, but they're not visually identifiable as any engine/trim combo could be selected. The only clue is a very close close-up of badging (rear door, maybe front wing in some cases). If anyone can be bothered to sort them out, my guess would be to make them all Escort Van as model, with numbers where available in extra info (which is what we do with the Transits).

Seems like a good system, Ford is the marque, Escort van is the Model name, 30, 45 etc just additional detail.

Not saying I disagree, but if we did that for these do we also do it for every other type of car derived van that is designated by capacity like Minor, Marina, Ital, Maestro etc Vans are?

The Noble Art of Fudging (= creating a system we can all live with). Minors are fine because there's a chronological but unilinear sequence of types/names with visible differences as it progresses. The problem is more with parallel versions without obvious visuals to split them, as the Leylandii examples mentioned. And others such as 400E with 10, 12 or 15cwt (plus export numbers), which Pierre raised a few times. But we muddle through without tripping up ... Making imcdb totally 100% consistent would be like trying to eradicate world poverty - we all agree it's a Good Thing To Do, but it'll never happen.

But for Escort Vans, we could petition Sir Admin to do a couple of straightforward block updates - the examples we have are fairly easy to identify??

Even Minors are often named just as a default as we can't tell 6cwt from 8cwt, not sure how that's any different from the Escort.

The more I look at it, the more I think the right thing to do with the naming would actually involve the numbers as they're quite well known (plenty of non IMCDB results on Google) and are used prominently in brochures: Link to "www.flickr.com" https://www.flickr.com/photos/61090099@N04/13393149655 It would keep them consistent with the other similar vans and is hardly less relevant in a model name than fairly standard trim levels like "1300E" or "CLX RS" which have worked their way into model names here.

So far as I'm aware, the lighter versions were always the most common (MKV and MKVI were 55 and 75), so maybe Escort 30/35/55 (which one depends on the generation) Van etc as a default for UK? As an aside, the naming wasn't consistent across Europe, it was called Escort Express in other countries like D so we can't even use the "Van" naming to collect them all together. Not sure what country is seen here as this series hops about a bit.

In Italy I think it was just named Van, sadly I haven't nor can find any official source for my market, but I'm quite positive there was no trace of the numbers
