Yeah, why not? There's so much glass in the world, let's just use it all. Coachwork by Coleman Milne. |

Never thought about this before, but do you ever get hearses with tints?? |
◊ 2020-07-29 00:09 |
Sure. Usually not in the UK, but in various countries like Switzerland, Greece, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Portugal etc. you may find many funeral vehicles with tinted glass. |

Seems a contradiction - part of the purpose of a hearse is presumably the clear display of the coffin and tributes to the outside community as it passes through the streets. Tints prevent outsiders seeing this as easily. If there are practical issues for hotter countries about keeping the interior and contents cool, then just turn up the air-con?? |

It's not done for technical reasons like refrigeration - most Italian or Greek hearses are equipped with clear glass. It's actually a matter of discretion (+ sometimes a funeral director's individuality) and normally depends on how the hearse in question is used: Funerals or transportation or both? Some info on visible vs. hidden coffins here. In the UK, the drape panels mentioned on that page don't exist. You guys have high line hearses instead - double deckers, so to speak, just like the one above. Depending on how the hearse is used, the coffin is either displayed as above, or discretely hidden in the lower deck. Low line hearses with one deck are meant to be used for funerals and usually have clear glass. Removal vehicles in the UK sometimes have tinted glass, because they're used for transportation only. As always, we will find plenty of exceptions to the rule, but this is meant to be a quick and informative reply rather than a doctoral dissertation. |

Thanks - I am now as informed as I think I want to be. |

If this COVID persists they could use buses and stack the coffins upright. |

Normally this COVID-19 is serious at the moment, but your remark makes me laugh |

It is, indeed, very serious, especially for those amongst us who are no longer young. We are taking care, but life still has to go on. I will say that I am glad to be retired and not requiring to work any more. I have not seen my once a month lunch friends since March, we have usually met on the first Friday of every month since 1969, firstly in the evening, but at lunch for the last 12 years since I who have the honour of being the youngest, retired. The lockdown has stopped all this and our favourite location, a pub called "The Bull and Spectacles" dating back to 1650, is no more. Link to "www.google.com" -- Last edit: 2020-07-29 18:30:50 |

@dsl: You're welcome. Always at your disposal. @John: The Bull And Spectacles still appear to be in business - or at least they were a week ago, "available for takeout and delivery". Maybe it's not all lost and there's a way to meet your lunch friends at someone's house - or better - garden AND keep your favourite location going?! [I'm not aware of the local lockdown rules, though! At this moment in time, this wouldn't be a problem where I live.] @Everyone: Stay safe and healthy along with your loved ones! |

Thanks, nothing moving at all when I drove past recently, but let’s hope. We need a location in (or outside) which we can meet since we are scattered around these days. We are now down to 5 in number, 4 of whom I have known for 62 years. +me of course! -- Last edit: 2020-07-29 19:43:06 |

The Bull and Spectacles is definitely closed, we had, during the relaxation of last summer, moved to another place, but now await the efficacy of our vaccinations to blossom to the full, and the pubs to re-open. My wife and I are due for our first jabs on Tuesday, by which time most of the 70+ cohort shall have received their first go. -- Last edit: 2021-01-30 09:57:10 |
