RLW 3xxE was July 67; A35 Van was made until 1968, although not sure why.

Because the costs of the design, tooling and track set up had been amortised years before, and it still sold.

This one with ladders and beacon looks like a council or utilities vehicle thought it might be GPO but they only bought two !
Unusual in my view because most I saw were with small shopkeepers not fleets and were outnumbered 10 to 1 in small business world early 70s by that state of the art van the Morris Minor.

They were also ideal for world champion F1 race drivers bird pulling (Budgeriegars!) :)

Great Universal Stores placed a huge order for them, apparently for Kay’s catalogue items home delivery. The order must have been substantial enough for BL to continue production of the thing for some time, but the 948 or 1098cc engine had transmogrified into 848 by the last two or three years’ worth, presumably some tooling problem or an economy of scale with the mini, although one would have thought that the cylinder blocks would have been different.

You’re not the only one who remembers Budgie! (But Georgina Hale rather than Adam Faith, who always struck me as a twerp.)

Its always stuck in my mind because its the last car you would think of as James Hunt owning !
He was apparently very fond of it.

Around early 1963 - 939 EXU went to PO Telephones in dark green, 940 EXU went to Royal Mail in red. They've both been modelled by Vanguards - 939 EXU (VA01709) and 940 EXU (LP06545).

Not being into Formula 1 I wasn’t aware that James Hunt fancied those sort of birds.

Question is what was Jame Hunts ' A35 van ' reg. GDX249E a Countryman ?

''or the latter period of his life, the car became his main transport, as his Mercedes 450 SEL spent much of its time on bricks on his drive. A keen collector of budgerigars, Hunt took his birds around the country to shows in the back of his A35. Quite what Wandsworth residents made of being overtaken by a drifting Austin with James Hunt and a selection of budgies inside, we can’t imagine, although we’re sure the ever irreverent Hunt would have enjoyed the absurdity of the scene.''

It sports a roof vent, which suggests it to be a van with windows, in addition, the side windows don’t seem to have sliding capabilities.

I'm interested :king:
Wonder why his Merc was on bricks ?

Wonder where the A35 van is now ?

Was there a scene in the film Rush where he jumped into his A35 van with two crates of budgies and a Supermodel and headed out for a wild night at the Surrey Buderigar Society club house ?

There was an article in one of the classic car mags I remember reading, the air suspension had gone on his 6.9 and being in much reduced circumstances, he just couldn't afford to fix it.

He was reported as prefering the A35 van, the skinny crossplies made it easier to drift.
