This appears to be a Consul Cortina, 1962+. Separate sidelights/indicators and no throughflow ventilation.

Was the originally mentioned '440' part of the name in Australia ?

It was introduced in UK in September 1962. Assembly started in Australia by the end of the year for 1963. I guess these first 4-door Consul Cortinas were not called 440, but just Deluxe.

Just checked my reference book, and it is a bit ambiguous. It says they were released in Australia in 1962, and 12 months later (presumably when Aust production began) received the new grille with integrated park lights, and optional 1500cc engine. Models available were 220, 240, and 440. 220 and 240 were both two doors, 220 with the 1200cc engine and 240 with the 1500 and extra trim detail. The 440 was basically a four door 240. It doesn't actually say when the 220/240/440 designation came in but 1962 models are shown with the Consul badge on the bonnet, which disappears with the new grille in 1963, and I assume it only came in with the choice of 1200/1500 engines in 1963. So I guess this one is a 1962 Consul Cortina as picked by Chris40

By the way, my book, "The History of Ford In Australia" by Norm Darwin, states that the Cortina was mostly designed by an Australian designer working for Ford in the UK

By the time the Cortina was launched, most of the new models were introduced to the public at the motor shows that took place during the last months of the year - perhaps the most important ones by then took place in London and Paris and, in a certain way, Turin - and they were considered next year's models.
Actually, the first production batches were kept by the make for promotional purposes or delivered to special clients. Not a lot of "normal" customers received a new model before the end of the year.

The Cortina - badged as Consul Cortina - was introduced in September 1962 ( the 4-door version in October ) for the 1963 MY. In October 1964 ( for the 1965 MY ), it received a new front grille integrating the sidelights/indicators and a new ventilation system ( known as "Airflow" ) that implied the introduction of C-pillar vents. For this 1965 MY model the Consul name was dropped.

According to this Australian Cortina MkI site http://www.cortina-mk1.com/identify.php the Consul Cortina was sold/assembled (?) in Australia from November 1962 and it seems that the "Airflow" Cortina was only introduced there in March 1965.
Nevertheless, a closer look at the 2nd thumbnail reveals a detail that can date more precisely this particular car: it has the more prominent instrument pod that was introduced for 1964 and that was a feature of the last Consul Cortina cars, as can be seen here: http://www.cortina-mk1.com/models.php
